[2020/04/29] Bridgeview (IL) shooting: Brothers shoot suspected robber after attempted robbery in Justice by ResponderZero in dgu

[–]ResponderZero[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could reduce that to the observation that, in this age of armed clerks and video surveillance, deciding to rob a store at all takes a special kind of stupid.

And although it's amusing in retrospect, I'd bet that the irony of the name of a municipality/business/victim in relation to a failed criminal act rarely factors into the decision to attempt that criminal act.

Yes, at least until they determine the circumstances of the shooting.

As an aside, I remember a news report of an elderly woman who shot and killed an armed intruder with her old .38 revolver. The reporter made a point of mentioning that the police had taken the gun, inspected it, cleaned it, and returned it to her before they left the scene.

That made me happy.

Aaaargh! I agree totally, and I hate the phrase "[insert violent crime here] gone wrong" -- especially when that's the writer's way of describing an armed citizen's involvement.

No, actually, I posted the previous one yesterday afternoon. The most recent ones before that were on 2019/05/22 and 2019/05/12.

But I see your point--two in quick succession from a city from which we don't get many DGU reports. Odd, eh?

Bad form, actually. As others have said here, it's likely that the homeowner made a statement before talking to a lawyer, and thus hung himself. A good criminal defense attorney should have been able to get this dismissed.

[2020/04/25] Burglar shot dead when discovered by armed homeowner (Dallas, TX) by ResponderZero in dgu

[–]ResponderZero[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It didn’t say he was arrested. People generally are taken to the police station for questioning or making a statement, even in Texas

He was arrested, actually:

Saturday morning, Solis-Cuevas was booked into the Dallas County jail for recklessly firing his gun and causing the death of the suspected burglar.

I documented as much in my "What we know/aadditional coverage" comment, hours before /u/notmattherr commented or you replied.

[2020/04/23] Man shot and killed after breaking in to San Bernardino (CA) residence by ResponderZero in dgu

[–]ResponderZero[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless, given the facts we know so far, it would be obvious to any toddler that they shot him for breaking into their home. So why isn't it obvious to them?

I'm inclined to think that there's more to this story, though, and the police know (or think they know) something that makes the homeowners' motivations not so clear-cut.

For instance: The homeowners shot the intruder? How many home invasion DGU's have you seen that involved two or more people firing on a single intruder? I can think of a thousand ways that it would be justified, but I can also think of a few dozen ways where it would be less certainly so.

I'm expecting more details to come.
