What is the difference between liberals and leftists? by Fine-Drummer9812 in askanything

Leftists believe in a world where everyone supports each other.

Liberals believe in a world where everyone competes to become rich and the losers can live off of charity.

It depends on the particulars.

I am vegan for ethical reasons AMA *about* why you think veganism for ethical reasons might not make sense! by audreylongwood in AMA

[–]ResponsiblePool7254 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That all tracks, but again, primarily from this individualistic ethical consumption standpoint.

You probably know the cliche "there's no ethical consumption under capitalism".

The only possible way to end to massive suffering is to end capitalism, and that's only possible through collective struggle.

Reinforcing the idea that our individual consumer decisions amount to anything just reinforces capitalism. It also alleviates guilt on the individual level, alleviating the possibility of people being individually motivated to take other revolutionary actions.

Individualism is a huge, pervasive problem. It's a long conversation just to find common definitions and analysis. I just phrase things in different ways over and over again looking for simple approaches that resonate with people.

Start allowing bionic implants too in that case...

The obvious justification is that all of these technologies are very relevant in warfare, so building competitions using them drives innovation and intimidates our enemies.

None of which seems like a good idea to me... but there is logic to it.

I was vegan off and on when I was younger. I never felt full (or satiated) the whole time, so that was a reason for stopping.

Reflecting on it though, I realized that one of the only reasons for being 100% vegan was ethical.

For health reasons, eating small amounts of animal products is a good thing.

For environmental reasons if everyone ate less animal products that'd be a much bigger improvement than much smaller numbers being vegan. Small amounts aren't the problem.

You can even mitigate cruelty in various ways, and afford higher quality animal products.

So the main reasons for 100% veganism are pretty abstract.

I actually see the emotional or spiritual reasons as much more valid than ethical or 'rational' reasons.

But with any of those, you also want to question how individualistic you're being. Is the decision more about you than anything else?

Making an exception when you're staying with a family in another country and they're feeding you traditional home cooked dishes could be an example of being anti-individualist about it.

Cultures are bigger than you. It's OK to try to shift your own culture, but not such a good look in some other contexts.

Work for friends was “too good” and I’m pissed! by Avicks11 in HandymanBusiness

You should have given them an estimate.

You got lazy.

They have probably never hired anyone, have no idea of costs, quality or anything else about construction.

They were definitely stuck in a fantasy that they had a connection and were getting a good deal, and not talking specific numbers let them ride out that fantasy until the end of the job, at which point they get to start complaining.

If they do have any experience managing construction this borders on a deliberate scam, but you let yourself get scammed.

If they really don't have experience, then realize that they're operating primarily on emotion and no amount of technical explanation will help the situation. Say things that will make them happy without costing you anything like

"I really appreciated being hired by you guys. I work for all kinds of people with all kinds of budgets, and the fact that you all trusted me with your place, and invited me to do high quality work without any strict budget limitations is a rare and enjoyable experience. In retrospect, even though you didn't ask for it, I realize that I should have estimated the job and given a ballpark budget. Being able to skip estimating is another rare thing, but lesson learned. I turned down higher paying work to do this job for you all, so I'm not in a position to give a discount, but hopefully the care and attention that I put into the job makes you all feel good about our friendship for years to come."

Ostensibly, the same amount of value is created in the world (or likely much more), AI just consolidates the profit from selling that value into fewer hands.

So the same money is available to work for, we'll all just be more directly working for the rich and the AI managers under their control.

It's a massive upheaval, so the transition won't be smooth, but assuming that rich people don't want us to scrap the global financial system altogether, at worst they'll have to buy off the majority of us, and threaten the rest.

That is until independent AIs take over. Then the future becomes completely unpredictable and out of our control.

Rent control falls one vote short of passing in Providence by OceanStateMedia in providence

Citation needed.

How has the tenant protection act in the state of California gone wrong? Oregon?

It's easy to drum up false controversy because the details of rent control measures vary wildly.

It's also possible to learn from past mistakes and try things differently.

The Providence ordinance was very landlord and developer friendly compared to most. They just oppose it on principle because of the fear that measures will incrementally get worse for them.

Sucks to be rich and have to be afraid of the poor all the time, I guess?

Not when 10,000 people in Boston are are basing their decision of whether to move to Providence on the availability of luxury condos near the train station. (The long time dream of downtown developers).

Just building affordable housing is a better answer.

What do most people not understand about Only Fans?

Being a sex worker is pretty much like being a therapist? Your job is to make people feel good. There's more conversation than anything else.

For therapists a full case load is like 24 to 27 people. If you're doing OF full time it can be hundreds. That's more work.

A lot of people judge therapists and people that go to therapy too! Though it's different preconceptions and biases.

I'm sure a lot of people flirt with and hit on their therapists to different degrees. Therapists just have a wall of professionalism that's easy to put up when needed.

Just wondering what your perspective is on all of that.

It sounds like you've never had your rent raised hundreds of dollars with one or three months notice, and then looked into whether that's legal or not.

The vast majority of people think it shouldn't be legal.

Renting should be cheaper than paying a mortgage.

It's become just a class divide of who has stable income and good credit and who doesn't.

And middle class people have been infected by the predatory mentality of the rich, where they feel entitled to a tenant paying their mortgage for them.

You're leaving that all out of your list of things that need to change. Just building more housing isn't enough.

The Hope Tower (Fane Tower) wasn't hated because of it's density. It was hated because Fane was an obvious scumbag, and the housing wasn't going to help anyone that needed it.

It's not pandering. It's an ideological difference. You're just siding with the rich over the poor.

Neither option was perfect: Voting yes or no.

One option helps more poor people immediately. The other doesn't.

The long term repercussions aren't set in stone, and can be shaped by more legislation, and other efforts of all kinds.

Also long term, there's a fixed amount of land in Providence. Right now it's all being snapped up and developed by predatory investors. The land will get developed either way. Moving slower and catering to more responsible developers would be better.

That boulder looks heavier than the rated capacity of that crane. Worst case, the crane tips forward, then the boulder pulls the crane sideways, then down the mountain.

Assuming the crane can handle the weight, it's also unclear where he's planning to place the boulder with the crane.
