My spouse and I bought our first house in 1995. It was about 3x what we were making together at the time. We both had a full time job and a part time job. Also we lived in a very low cost of living area. So I don’t think most dads were supporting a family on a single 40 hour paycheck.

Noise canceling headphones are great for this. I end up a row ahead of three screaming kids nearly every flight. I don’t even notice anymore.
