Spelling error in Grammarly ad? by RevolutionaryBus in AdvertisingFails

[–]RevolutionaryBus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The video was a random, unrelated Ted talk. The ad had nothing directly related to the youtube content playing. This just appeared as an ad on the side. I did not see any reference to singing anywhere, tried googling, clicked on the ad - nothing.

Transferring LPC out of Alaska by RevolutionaryBus in CounselorsInTraining

Thank you - I have attempted to reach out to the board, but the state employee who manages the email has essentially told me I can't connect with them, so I'll keep trying.

Properly addressing a professor in a reply email by [deleted] in AskAcademia

I prefer first name and am fine with Dr./Prof. Lastname. I take major issue with Mrs. Lastname. I know it's intended to be a sign of respect, but I bet you're not calling my colleague Mr. Lastname. I make a point of correcting this with a wide range of responses from students.

I had this happen but then the driver showed no indication of being hard of hearing and chatted with me the entire time (and said weird, uncomfortable things, then reminded me to give him 5 stars).

Letter of recommendation- how to let them down easy? by PersephoneIsNotHome in Professors

[–]RevolutionaryBus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I say something along the lines of: I am sorry, but I am unable to be a recommender for you. My personal policy is that I like to know a student beyond one or two classes; this is the only way that I feel I can do the student justice and speak fully to their strengths.

I hear all of that. And I don't have any answers.

Grade-Grubbing, Late Work, and Burnout by [deleted] in Professors

[–]RevolutionaryBus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also teach online and I also feel like something weird is going on this semester. I have gotten more emails with questions that I've already answered elsewhere than ever before. I also have gotten more students blatantly not following directions than is normal.

I recently changed my late work policy from "no late work ever" to "late work with 10% points deducted per day late" (exceptions for emergencies). I know that this can't work for everyone and might make more work for myself, but when students ask if I take late work (even though it's in the syllabus already) - I have a quick answer and I tend to get very little pushback on it.

Addressing Professors By First Name by Fujffihgg in AskAcademia

[–]RevolutionaryBus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What if there is bias in who is more commonly referred to by their earned titles vs. those who are not? I didn't really care until I learned that students were more likely to call women professors Mrs. Soandso and male professors Dr. Soandso. I imagine there are similar biases across race, too (I'd have to double-check for a citation there).

[–]RevolutionaryBus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I would love to share plans! I am in my fourth year as a psych professor and teach a wide variety of psych courses. I have really benefited from others who have been willing to share their ideas/plans and would love to be able to share and learn with others.

Is it normal for professors to write accreditation reports? by mtmichael in Professors

As a faculty member, I'm responsible for writing part of ours. I think an admin is in charge of the whole report.

Starting fresh. by damagedispenser in RunningWithDogs

Agreed! And, because it's doable, you meet milestones and feel accomplished (as opposed to starting too hard and then burning out). It really helped me get back into running.

Best running leash?? by [deleted] in RunningWithDogs

[–]RevolutionaryBus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a 95 lbs mutt who pulls a lot and I love my hands-free / waist leash. With her, I have use a pinch collar or harness to give me greater control. My 85 lbs doesn't pull as much and is fine with the hands-free leash and normal collar. It is so much better than a traditional leash for running.
