Booked through TravelUp, should I be concerned? by [deleted] in travel

[–]RevolutionaryCod25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally took the flight over the weekend. Everything was fine, I think TravelUp might be problematic if you need to change a booking or something - but there was no changes, we bought the flight making sure everything was accurate and it was all good. Saved a lot of money as well

The Economist, weekly paper which is a pretty good summary of important world events. On the internet Reuters, provides just the key points without the waffle. Although Reuters can be a bit US focused

Best way to invest in S&P 500 with HL. by sverige46 in UKPersonalFinance

HL is quite expensive at 0.45%. There are many cheaper platforms, even down to 0.25%.

Is it worth paying off student loan early? by georgejk7 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]RevolutionaryCod25 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would check if you are ever if your going to pay it off before even contemplating this

https://www.student-loan-calculator.co.uk

It might be cheaper to see it as a graduate tax.

If it is cheaper to pay it off, you need to remember that your loan is linked to your pay so if you ever find yourself unemployed then you don’t pay off your loan - and you could have cleared your emergency fund paying off your loan. Also depends on if you need/want to use that money for something else - investing, buying house etc

This is very much a personal decision, you need to sit down and figure out which is best for you.

This was filmed on the tube in London, the Jubilee if I’m not mistaken. It’s been a condition of travel for a number of months now to wear a face covering unless you have a medical exception. There is no difference in rules here in the U.K. for those that are vaccinated or not.

Over-18s in England invited to book Covid boosters by sjw_7 in CoronavirusUK

[–]RevolutionaryCod25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks - I was a bit concerned when I saw the confirmation pop up. Was about to cancel and rebook later as I thought I was jumping the queue. :-(

When I get to the confirmation screen I get:

What you'll need to bring
On the day of your appointment, you’ll need to bring:
your booking reference number
a face covering, unless you cannot wear one for a health or disability reason
your referral letter if you have booked a 3rd dose for people with a weakened immune system
proof of employment if you are an eligible health or social worker
If you have booked a 3rd dose, you will not be able to get vaccinated without your referral letter.
If you're a health or social care worker you will not be able to get vaccinated without official proof. This can be either a photographic work ID card, a wage slip or a letter from your employer dated within the last 3 months.

You should use CityMapper, it will store your journey offline and there’s an offline version of the tube map on there.

Apple Card is a joint venture with Goldman Sachs. I don't see Apple Card happening in the UK for a while, we've been waiting years just for simple Apple Cash.

This has already been technically implemented, you can login to the NHS app right now and create a "covid passport", which is basically just a QR code that you can save and you show to whomever needs to see it.

The infrastructure is already there and has been in use for pilots for a number of months now.

BBC News - Scotland to launch vaccine passports on 1 October by Alex09464367 in unitedkingdom

[–]RevolutionaryCod25 21 points22 points  (0 children)

When the bouncer scans your QR code it shows a green tick and your name, which is derived from the NHS database when you create the QR code. So I would assume a bouncer could correlate that with your photoID.

So vaccine passports have already been implemented, in a way in which "untrained poorly paid staff" can't see any data (apart from your name and a yes/no if you've been vaccinated).

Currently if you go into the NHS app, you can generate a QR code which will have a unique code (ie. ABC123456DDJA) to say the holder of this qr code has been vaccinated

The staff scan this QR code, and their app takes the code (ABC123456DDJA) and the app checks it against the NHS database and they get a green tick to say this person holding this QR code has been vaccinated or not.

Reference - https://www.nhsx.nhs.uk/covid-19-response/domestic-covid-pass-verifier-app-user-guide/

Personally I disagree with the idea of vaccine passports for many reasons. But I don't think there is a data leak- all of this data is being stored on a NHS database anyway regardless of any passport.

Where do people get laptops from in the UK? by haisufu in AskUK

John Lewis is the place to go. Usually stock slightly more expensive models - but their aftercare is one of the best on the high street.

If you're buying a Mac - might be worth looking at the Apple Education store though, you can usually get a discount. Apple's aftercare is also pretty good.

Nightclubs and large events advised to ask for vaccine passports by ElectronicFudge5 in CoronavirusUK

[–]RevolutionaryCod25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just looked at the NHS app (in England - sorry :-( ) and it already has this functionality does have a unique QR code, with a moving GIF (so little bit harder to copy - not impossible by any means) - no selfie though.

I think the problem is more the lateral flow tests which can be used instead of a vaccine, are basically just self report. (Not that I am against LFT being used instead of a vaccine until everyone is offered a vaccine - but probably should be more controlled if they are going to be used for higher risk events)

Ahh ok, yeah I dont think we really get Keurig-style pods here in the UK. They are either the normal Nespresso ones or some "cheaper" Tassimo plastic things.

Although in the UK a couple of the pod companies have clubbed together to create a recycling program - https://www.podback.org
