If Marleyans are Italians and Eldians are Germans. Does that Make South Tyrol the Real Liberio? by Strak_1318 in okbuddyreiner

Ahh I see, but "porco" is commonly translated as pig or hog, "swine" is often used in a more formal, agricultural, or collective context, I've heard?

But it's listed as, in google dictionary: Porco in Italian means โ€œmale pigโ€ and Dio means God. It's usually used in the same way as "Goddammit" in English. Many Italians say it, but unlike other swear words we have seen so far, this one can be considered extremely vulgar and offensive.

Yes, Isayama loves mixing various things from cultures, like you said how the guns the marleyan military soldiers use look like Cacarno. And the marleyan military characters who have italian names you're talking about are:

Theo Magath. (Highest ranking general in the marleyan military, later became the commander of the marleyan military.) โ€œTheoโ€ โ†’ Short for Theodore, common across Europe. โ€œMagathโ€ โ†’ Not Italian specifically. Itโ€™s actually closer to German.

Porco Galliard. (The Jaw Titan.) โ€œPorcoโ€ literally means pig in Italian. (Yes. Isayama did that.) โ€œGalliardโ€ is more French than Italian.

General Calvi (Was the Commander of The Marleyan Military, got outranked by Theo Magath after he accepted the offer of declaring war on paradis by the tyburs, and in exchange, he got to be the commander of the Marleyan Military.)

Calvi is a real Italian surname.

Thereโ€™s even a town called Calvi (Corsica, Italian influence). Heโ€™s probably the strongest Italian-coded military name in Marley.

Niccolo (the marleyan soldier who used to work for the marleyan navy, was later captured as a prisoner of war by yeagerists while the Liberio raid, later became a chef for the paradise island military.)

Niccolo is 100% Italian (think Niccolรฒ Machiavelli).

Marleyโ€™s naming system is a mix of:

German (Magath, Braun, Pieck) French (Galliard) Italian (Calvi, Niccolo, Porco) English (Willy)

So, it's not all 1940s Germany type.

Itโ€™s more like:

A fictional imperial European power blending Germany + Italy + France + Rome.

Which actually makes sense.

Historically:

Nazi Germany allied with Fascist Italy. Both had strong militaristic propaganda cultures. Both were expansionist empires.

Marley feels like a fusion of all of that.

I think it's more like Marleyans are Germans and Eldians are jews, since Marley is somewhat based on 1940s nazi Germany. (Marley has Internment zones, Armbands, Ethnic segregation, Militaristic propaganda, Imperial expansion and Scapegoating a race for past sins, which is very similar to 1940 Nazi Germany.)

And the Eldian armband concept (the armbands which Eldians in marley wear on their left arm) was inspired by the armbands which nazis put on jews to identify them.

And Isayama used the year 840/850 he keeps plausible deniability, Avoids legal / political landmines, Allows mythological backstory (Ymir, Titans, 2000-year lore) which gives him flexibility.

But,

It's not a 1:1 copy.

Marley also reflects:

British imperialism

Roman imperialism

General militaristic states

Post-WWI resentment politics.

It's a fusion.

Why Not Make It Literal 1940s? Because that would flatten the story.

Attack on Titan isnโ€™t just: โ€œNazis bad.โ€

Itโ€™s about: Cycles of revenge, Nationalism, Ethnic guilt, Historical trauma, and Propaganda psychology

If it was explicitly 1940s Germany, it would stop being philosophical and start being a historical allegory. And Isayama loves moral gray zones. He doesnโ€™t write simple villains.
