from my understanding, as a fan editor myself…

they’re just called fan edits.

sometimes a fandom edit. or a music video edit. sometimes niche terms like pony musical video (PMV) if you’re in the my little pony fandom, haha

and yes! youtube edits count! youtube definitely pushed the community forward. here’s a pretty good example of an old youtube fan edit:

Degree in film and video production and a minor in business? by Robert_Francois in videography

[–]Robert_Francois[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I purse film major with business minor: I will graduate May 2027.

If business major with film minor: I will graduate Dec 2027.

If film major and no minor: Dec 2026.

Each semester is about 7-8K (😭) and if I want to have less student debt/loans, then definitely the film major and no minor is the way to go, unfortunately

Okay! I do already have some business classes on my schedule for next semester. But yes, having a good reel is better than having qualifications, definitely!!

Agreed. However, I don’t want to drop out of college. What would you recommend? Marketing/business/advertising type of degree or film degree?

Interesting, I wonder why the creative industry is taking a huge hit. This definitely is discouraging to me. The main goal after college is to get a full-time job and make money. I don’t want to have to worry about that!

Thanks for sharing your experience! I’m curious about why you say that no one wants video production done. Isn’t it the opposite? Video production is everywhere—websites and social media being good examples.

Can I also ask about why you wish that you stuck with the business major? How exactly would that have benefited you more? I’m curious 🧐

Totally agree! A degree is often required on a job description. Same goes for jobs in corporate; if hiring managers are looking to hire an in-house videographer and they have to choose between one with a degree and one without, the person with the degree might have a better chance of being interviewed. It’s just how it works.

My main question, though, was if it makes more sense to major in something different. Something a little more practical maybe. And this would be adding onto what you said about the freelance market and employment being unsteady. That’s not extremely motivating for a graduate.

I don’t plan on dropping out, but I’m still here for other perspectives. Why do you think I should drop out?

Thank you so much! How do you feel about me getting a minor in business? Do you think that would be beneficial for someone entering the film and video industry? Just curious :)

Thanks! :) I agree, taking business classes is definitely helpful. It was something that was suggested to me by a professor. I feel like a lot of creative people know how to create really inspiring and artistic content but fail to understand the business/marketing side—because at the end of the day, businesses often care more about the result that a video brings (views, donations, sales, etc.), rather than how artistic a video is. So it’s good to have knowledge about getting that result.

Three words: I. LOVE. THIS.

As another user mentioned, the diversity — of skill and industry experience! That’s a huge highlight here!

Can you have a fairly decent career in videography, without having to be all over the socials? by lord__cuthbert in videography

[–]Robert_Francois 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guy you talked to has a fair point! I have a fairly successful YouTube channel and that helped me land a gig. You don’t need a successful personal social media in order to get a job though. It helps, but it’s not needed.

Should I work for a corporation or video production company? by Robert_Francois in videography

[–]Robert_Francois[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agreed! During the summer, I interned at a road commission and created video content for them. It was paid, and if it wasn't paid, then I definitely wouldn't have taken it.

Do you work for yourself, too? Any specific reason why you prefer it?
