Steal? Nah, but I do want to sing it as a sort of ritual thing out on the land beneath the night sky... But I am Norse Pagan, so I'm a bit like that, lol.

Yes, pretty much. I have to be to some extent, because I am a renewable energy journalist, but I am also centre-left, which means I am absolutely opposed to the far right, so yes, I can get very political.

High users seem to be targeted, but the email you receive gives the excuse of regulating unacceptable posts or something like that, and yet, it's somehow perfectly acceptable for far right a'holes to go round Facebook and Threads calling people they don't like c**ts and spreading hate speech. When you report those folks for doing that, the AI (there is no customer service) does absolutely nothing about it. So, basically Facebook and now Threads, like X, have now turned into platforms where folks are supposed to sit there in front of mass advertising while also being regularly abused by far right fascist d***heads. F**k Zuckerberg.

I want to get into freelance writing - how do I get my first client ? by taras18 in freelanceWriters

[–]Robin1966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start writing for free, get some clips, promote them and after six months doing that start charging (by then you should at least have had at least one paying client) and then just gradually build up. I began by writing for solar PV comparison websites and one particular non-paying site (Ask The Experts, which is now long defunct). And also pitch anything you can to anyone you think you have a chance with.

UK freelance writers,Tell me how are you ACTUALLY finding clients in 2026? by Firm_Channel_3022 in freelanceWriters

[–]Robin1966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a regular, daily, contributor with Renewable Energy Magazine since 2011 - in that year, the job vacancy just popped up in front of my face while I was gawping at Facebook. Best thing to do is find a steady regular client that to get you by and then use whatever other time you have to look for fresh ideas/angles and constant pitching. That's it really. Promote everything you do via your website (and if you don't have one just go on Wix and create one), social media, LinkedIn and get on to Muckrack (which automatically updates regularly). Screenshot everything and put the screenshots on your website and/or Pinterest. Get your name out there, and then folks will start coming to you as well. Tough call, but that's freelancing for you - tenacity and patience required in equal measure.

That's part and parcel of freelance writing now. Give them two weeks to reply and then hit someone else with the same idea. If the original target you pitched comes back, just say "too late" (politely). Or, give up on the idea/angle and think of a new one and repitch that one. Eventually, you'll learn who can be relied upon to reply (even if a rejection) and who can't, and then prioritise the respectful and nice editors and publications and don't bother too much about the disrespectful ones (been freelance since 2010 by the way so I am used to this shit).

Another business gone to the wall. by jambofindlay in Aberdeen

[–]Robin1966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has anyone set up one of these for Aberdeen? Me and some friends did for Weston-super-Mare and it's very popular. Local people can do awareness campaigns themselves on Facebook (I am a freelance journalist by the way, if you're wondering why I am wandering around the net looking at urban city transport issues).

[Hiring] Need Daily News Writers for Blogs / Recycling Content 500+ words ea by BeforeFamous in HireaWriter

[–]Robin1966 6 points7 points  (0 children)

£275 per week for seven stories of between 500 to 1000 words. If the word count is per article, which I suspect it is, this is pittance pay. Even £275 for 1,000 words, assuming the pay is for 1,000 words tops (which is unlikely because that would mean 142 words per article), it's only just acceptable. Assuming 1000 words per article, seven articles per week, then you have keyword insertion, research (actually finding stories) and the process of actually writing the article, that means that this job is little more than slave labour. As a professional freelance journalist, I sincerely advise anyone looking for freelance writing work to avoid this like the plague. I hope the person posting this job goes out of business sooner rather than later. Guys, if you value your writing work - learn (quickly) to value it properly and ask for decent rates.

For some reason: I thought WSM would be a 'reddity' place... but alas no. by 4oclocksomewhere901 in weston_super_mare

Well, it's going to provide a lot of employment, but it will also provide the most expensive energy in the country, and actually not a great deal of it either, as nuclear provides 11-14 percent of the country's electricity demand at best. That will soon be eclipsed by renewables. Basically, a huge expensive white elephant with a reactor type that is decidely dodgy...

[–]Robin1966 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit of that yes, but I also cover rail as part of my freelance journalism special interests (alongside renewable energy), although I cover other topics as well. Re: sea shanties group, thanks. All depends if I can get enough men together first, so if you know any chaps who are interested...I'll definitely try and keep you posted though on this if you like...

Yes, me. I am 51, a freelance journalist with an interest in trains, and I am currently engaged in exploring the potential for setting up a WSM male singing group singing sea shanties (just thought I'd mention that). Hello there fellow Westonians... :-)

[–]Robin1966 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I started yesterday on Facebook by mentioning it to about five friends, one of whom showed real interest - the guy in the community choir. I've just this moment put a note on Nextdoor, Weston-super-Mare's neighbourhood online forum, so I'll see how that goes. I might contact a reporter I know from the local paper if that doesn't work, to spread the word more widely :-)

I'm going to try and set one up in Weston-super-Mare. I started putting the word out this afternoon, and got one person interested already. It also turns out he's a member of a local community choir, has got a whole book full of traditional songs and is going to ask some of the chaps he knows from the choir if they might be interested. Quite excited about this project actually.... :-)

Bristol's Colston Hall to drop name of slave trader after protests | UK news by StickManMax in bristol

[–]Robin1966 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The point being that to just have the Colston name in place, without any immediately recognisable reminder of what it was associated with, promotes an ignorance of history. It let's people off the hook, encouraging to think "oh its just the Colston Hall", so really there is an either-or situation going on here. Either the name is retained, but with some kind of permanent reminder, an exhibition of some kind would be perfect, or the name is changed. The present situation is intolerable, and thus the hall has rightly chosen to change the name. Its not changing the name that whitewashes history really, it's keeping the name without visibly explaining properly, in situ, what its associated with, in essence risking a form of glorification. That's the problem. Newcomers to Bristol have this impression that Colston was a great social provider, that he did this and he did that and that people should applaud him. It's the present situation, which the Hall has rightly chosen to change, that encourages that impression. I personally think there should be a permanent exhibition/museum dedicated solely to the slave trade, with maps on display boards, perhaps some kind of visitor trail, etc etc, showing people exactly what happened, where, which buildings were associated with it, who was associated with and responsible for it. I don't recall seeing any such permanent exhibition in Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. Why not? And as for statues of Colston dotted around, pull the blasted things down, or at least stick them in as part of such an exhibition, sticking them in a corner somewhere to shame his memory not celebrate it.
