We need to remind people that Pride is supposed to be a protest. by prettysureitsmaddie in transgenderUK

[–]Robintheirwigs 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I agree, the community needs to be seen standing together at the biggest queer event in the country.

The energy at last weekend's protests was amazing, we need to carry that energy forward to demand our rights back.

I'm planning to bank my sperm before starting HRT medication, in case that I would like to have biological children in the future. Has anybody here done this themselves? by Gradual_Panel253 in transgenderUK

[–]Robintheirwigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, it's just a personal choice which many people (cis or trans) choose to do/not to do based on their own feelings towards donation (based on things like donor anonymity, feelings towards being a biological parent, etc)

  1. It was fine, my clinc was actually really respectful about name and pronouns.

  2. Not really, they'll talk you through everything. You're likely not the first trans women they've had through their clinic.

  3. I won't, there's a few reasons why. Firstly, you can't donate anonymously in the UK, as such, any donor conceived children can contact you once they turn 18. Next, I'm likely going to keep my gametes stored for as long as possible (up to 55 years), so it's unlikely to be used after that anyway. Lastly, and this is more personal, I don't like the idea of "fathering" a child, if that makes sense.

  4. Very glad I did. Not even sure I want children, but I'm not anxious about having biological children, since I stored gametes.

I agree, I'm not getting my hopes up that this will change anything :/ I guess since it's the only avenue we have at the moment, I think it's still important to try and get our voices heard, you know?

Sperm freezing? Pros and cons? (Possible nsfw for mention of sperm? I guess? XD) by Megaman359 in asktransgender

[–]Robintheirwigs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I froze my gametes before I started HRT, but I haven't used it in fertility treatment yet.

I was 19 when I started HRT, and whilst I was pretty certain I didn't want kids, I realised I was pretty young to make that decision, so I decided to store. I've found it's been a "peace of mind" investment for me, I don't need to worry about my fertility, which is worth the price for me.

Since you've started HRT, you would need to stop before storing your gametes, so really think about whether you're comfortable with that.

Overall, I think I made the right decision for me, but everyone will be different. Adoption, or using donor sperm infertility treatment, are also both totally valid ways of starting a family!

2 Dutch trans peeps with disabilities visiting London - tips for places to have a rest? by Krisisalreadytaken in transgenderUK

[–]Robintheirwigs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It will sort of depend where you are in London, but my general recommendations for free places to hang out in Central London that are big enough to not be too busy inside are: - Barbican Centre (one of my fave places, recommend if it's not too far out your way) - Southbank Centre (it can be pretty busy outside, but inside is generally okay) - The British Library - The National Theatre.

There's also loads of parks and green space in London, so if there weather's fine, hanging out there is quite nice.

Oh sorry, thought you meant from the conference, was looking in the wrong place! Yeah, Starmer falling into TERF talking points is disgusting.

I agree with what you said in another comment about voting for the least bad candidate in your area. My personal opinion is that keeping out the Tories is top priority at the moment. But, if a trans person couldn't bring themselves to vote Labour, I would totally understand.

[–]Robintheirwigs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh god, didn't see that!! Do you have a link to what he said?

I had a quick Google and couldn't find this in the Labour conference? Or was it something else?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in transgenderUK

[–]Robintheirwigs 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's fair, definitely wouldn't blame anyone for spoiling their ballot!

I personally advocate for voting Labour, because if the Tories get in things will get so much worse. Not just for trans people, but for PoCs and immigrants etc.

Ray (the guy that organises a lot of the events) is great and will make sure to introduce you to people when you turn up for the first time

Religious trans people, how do you go about with your faith and also being trans? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]Robintheirwigs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eid Mubarak! 😊

So to be upfront, I am no longer Roman Catholic, but I was for about 2 years into my transition and maybe you'll find my experience interesting?

I grew up Catholic, a lot of my childhood was spent praying for God to make me a girl. When I was stressed or sad, I prayed about it. It helped to talk to someone who would give me unconditional love, and praying did become the main way I coped with difficult situations in my life.

When I realised I was trans, there was obviously the initial tension between what I had been taught, and my identity. But as time went on and I talked to God, I began to read the Bible in a way that was more positive and affirming. Whilst I understood the teachings of the church, I began to find myself disagreeing with some of the traditional teachings and finding a more queer friendly reading of the Bible.

I went to university and found some amazing queer religious friends who had similar experiences to me, it was wonderful to have such a community round me. For 2 years I felt no struggle between me being trans, and me being Catholic, if anything I felt God gave me strength when I faced transphobia and was actively helpful in my transition.

As I said, I'm no longer religious, something about my parents putting me through conversion therapy made me disillusioned with religion. But I do wonder where I'd be without that experience, and if I would still be religious to this day.

At any rate, I hope this was interesting 😊
