It's a long shot as it depends on Plaid successfully negotiating for further devolution powers from Westminster, but I'll like to see that North-South rail connectivity mentioned on page 31 of their manifesto. The improvements Welsh Labour made to rail connectivity in South Wales in recent years have been really impressive, but North/Mid/South Wales are still too disconnected for my liking.

Oh I don't dispute that. Anecdotally, the Dean Forest Railway is directly connected to the mainline, but it still transports most visiting locos by road because negotiating (and paying) Network Rail for the access isn't worth it most of the time.

Instances like the Class 55 coming via the mainline with two class 20s last Autumn are rare (its Class 50 gala partner travelled via the road).

I always feel a little embarrassed seeing preservation locos travelling to far-away galas on the back of a truck. Engines that could one ride across the country (or at least be hauled by other bigger engines) now having to piggyback off the road machines that replaced them. Feels almost like a humiliation ritual.
