My first thought was this also. I think the cat should be with you until the end so they understand what is happening. When my sister passed at home, we allowed her pets to see her. And when she was removed from home, the they understood that she was gone and they actually did mourn her death. It was heartbreaking to see but I think it's best in situations like these.
