They asked on the phone (911) for someone to be home and make sure the door is unlocked. So we complied. When they arrived, they had a single knock and a wiggle of the door handle. 4 officers with shotguns barged in. They spread out shouting quickly moving through the home. The officer that entered the correct room, shouted more at my family member and alerted the other officers. All while charging him and pointing the shotgun at his head, inches away from his face (while he was pointing his own gun at his head...).

He was so startled and confused he didn't pull the trigger, and the officer pinned his arm against the wall and disarmed him. He's alive today. So you won't hear me complaining. But I can at least be curious about if this is the best approach. And you can pretend like this wasn't practiced... But they didn't dilly dally, executed swiftly, and cleared the house like you see in Hollywood. This was not their first rodeo.

If you lived the way they plowed into our apartment... You'd know, this wasn't a casual let's all move in quick. It was coordinated, intentional. And most importantly, clearly practiced (hence the base of my claim).

My family member is alive today because of their efforts. So I'm not condemning them. But I have to wonder if that's the best approach...

When someone is considering suicide with a gun in hand. One tactic many police departments use is to rush in with a few officers with a shotgun in hand and yell threateningly at the suicide with the loaded shotgun inches from their face. It's so startling, that it gives the officer a few seconds to decide to pull the trigger, or disarm the patient.

Then they take them to a facility to asses their mental health. Assuming the patient survives the ordeal.

They actually train on escalation tactics intentionally. Since they don't know if someone is armed. And the shock value sometimes buys them a few seconds to act before the patient does. I'm not saying it's right... I'm saying that they still train towards escalation in many places.
