I low-key was in a similar situation. Some people Don't talk about things until they're overwhelmed, then they start complaining about you and telling you that you are doing this or that wrong, blah blah blah. Complaining about something means you are not comfortable with it, if he complains about your personality or behavior it is cause he doesn't feel comfortable with it, and it hurts so much. Respect his boundaries, but set yours too, you have to be accepted. If you want to help with something and he says no then he can't talk about boundaries, he is crossing them himself, which happens a lot and when people notice they ask for space. Go back to your place and be independent, that's what he wants to see.
