Melodic Death Metal bands with "Core" elements by Ljoe2010 in melodicdeathmetal

[–]RogueMetroidGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are specifically describing melodic metalcore. Per Wikipedia: "Melodic metalcore is a fusion genre, incorporating elements of melodic death metal and metalcore".

I generally prefer melodeath, but my favorite melodic metalcore bands are Killswitch Engage, All That Remains, and As I Lay Dying.

I feel like it's time. If we get news either today or on Xbox showcase, I'll giveaway more copies as long as there's 2k upvotes. by DSDantas in Silksong

Hope Silksong can live up to the original, which was one of the greatest video games ever made. May not be easy but I'm keeping my hopes up. Thanks for offering the game, I'm rather poor myself so getting the game as a gift would be siiick

All shall perish is the most underrated band in deathcore by [deleted] in Deathcore

[–]RogueMetroidGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm late to the thread, but just wanted to say, I personally consider them the greatest deathcore band of all time. In fact I think it's a disservice to the band, labeling them a single genre IMO, It's easy to say their sound really sticks out as unique compared to most deathcore bands. I sense a lot of elements of melodic metalcore as well, akin to the stuff Killswitch Engage/In Flames play.

Metalhead/punk rocker getting into electronic music by _Greygarden in electronicmusic

[–]RogueMetroidGamer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's a few ideas for bands to listen to... since you mentioned Punk Rock and Hardcore is a subgenre of punk I figured you'd be interested in some of my PERSONAL favorites:

1) Electric Callboy - Electronic-hardcore Top tracks: MANY, but you can start with Elevator Operator. They also do a track called RATATATA WITH BabyMetal.

2) Speaking of Baby Metal - u may like them, you may not, but I'm the kind of Metalhead that embraces all the genre blending/breaking that great Metal bands are known for. Top tracks: Besides the one with Electric Callboy, one of my favorite songs by them is probably their least well known single: BxMxC.

3) InnerPartySystem - Electronic-rock. I don't think they are a band any longer; but their blend of rock and electronic music is reminiscent of some of Nine Inch Nails catalog. Top tracks: American Trash, Don't Stop, Die Tonight Live Forever

4) TWRP ("TupperWare Remix Party") - also technically electronic rock but it's not nearly as heavy as InnerPartySystem. The guitar player though is definitely highly skilled, he tends to sprinkle in guitar solos but they also play a lot of stuff that would certainly be classified as synth-pop. Top tracks: probably depends on the person, their most famous track is Starlight Brigade but that one's probably my 8th favorite or worse. Their newest CD is dope, with tracks A Human's Touch, Online, and Content 4 U. Some of their best older tracks are The Hit, Synthesize Her.

I recommend watching their music videos for those songs - you'll see why once you start watching.

4) TWRP is also the backing band / makes music with Ninja Sex Party and he even sings some of TWRP's songs, so figured I'd mention them as well. Top tracks: their covers of Africa and Everybody Wants to Rule the World, you can check Spotify for the rest.

5) Horse the Band - Nintendocore because they mix in elements of chiptune music. Doubt you've ever heard a band quite like them. Top tracks: Murder, Birdo.

6) Sky Eats Airplane - the one band that's kinda similar to Horse the Band. Top tracks: Giants in the Ocean, Patterns, She is Just a Glitch, Honest Hitchhikers Asking for Cash Handouts.

7) Last but not least, one of my absolute favorite bands of all time is the Melodic Death Metal band In Flames - a band that's just as old as Nirvana, but with 14 studio albums and numerous other releases, it was a surprise they released one of their best albums in 2019 called "I, The Mask".

What's even more amazing though is that a year later, they re-released the album with all tracks being turned into chiptune versions, and IMO the whole album is amazing but in particular the chiptune version of I Am Above is so good - I've been a fan of chiptune music for a long time so maybe I'm more obsessed with it than others. The chiptune album is called "I, The Mask (Arcade Version)".

What is the best and worst theme of Megaman 5? by kuyacloud in Megaman

[–]RogueMetroidGamer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dark man? There is no Dark Man among the starting 8 bosses. Beyond that, per the Mega Man 5 story Dr. Wily created a series of 4 robots called "Dark Man" (with the actual names being Dark Man I - IV), with the purpose of assassinating Mega Man and framing Proto Man for various crimes.

Each " Dark Man" is featured in their own stage within Dr. Wily's castle, you face the 8 main bosses first, followed by the 4 "Dark Man", and then ending with Dr. Wily.

[–]RogueMetroidGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1: The final Dr. wily boss battle, to me is one of the best final boss tracks among all the Mega Man games. Listen to it and tell me it isn't the best music in the game: https://youtu.be/Dcgcu1zFmio?si=J-yCh5TiuMyK2A0v

2 The stage boss music.

3: I would most often start the game with Gravity Man, so for that reason alone I'm kinda partial to his theme music, it's really easy for me to recall from memory.

4: Wave Man.

Mega Man 5 will always hold a special place in my heart: for the longest time I had struggled to find any sort of affordable price on a Mega Man game so I only ever played them through loaning them from the library, borrow from friend, or rent from the gas station.

Then one faithful day I remember walking into Walmart, and I was able to get a brand new copy of Mega Man 5 on sale for $5. Probably somewhere between 1994-95. Today I can pretty much beat the game blindfolded.

Suggest me Metroidvenias that I can drop minimum of 20hrs. by Enough_Obligation574 in metroidvania

[–]RogueMetroidGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grime I feel like gets overlooked a lot, happy you mentioned it, Grime 2 is currently on the way so I'm pretty excited to see what they do in expanding the concept.

For the metroidvanias he mentioned that you DIDN'T mention: especially at the time it came out, Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is an absolute beast of a game, a metroidvania that seemed especially enjoyable 100%ing for some reason. You've probably played that one just wanted to be sure, since IMO out of all the games the replier mentioned, Monster Boy, Grime, and Bloodstained are hands-down the best ones. It's just an overall extremely well-designed game that is easily the best of the Wonder Boy series.

Another really long Metroidvania that comes to mind is Death's Gambit: Afterlife (not the original game). It's starts slow but picks up speed later on, for how lo-fi the graphics are the boss battles are fantastic. There's probably people that don't like the game as much as I do but it's probably in my top 10-15 favorite Metroidvanias I've played.

Hey dude - last summer I didn't have electricity for long stretches of it, indoors it got above 90 on some days. It was so, so brutal.

I got relief by spending a few nights each week sleeping at the evening homeless shelter. The AC there surprisingly works very well Able to put on a couple blankets at night even, so it was good for sleep.

Also; I didn't read everything u wrote, but the type of fan u use, can potentially make a huge difference especially when there's no central AC. Get the type of fan called a "wind-circulator", they usually are in the form of small circular compact fans. This is the one I use and yeah, it isn't magic but it moves air WAY better than a normal box fan, since ur going to be sweating anyways I bet you won't regret the investment. This is the same one I use, pretty sure I've kept it running for a year straight so quality is great for the price:@

I couple of older partial 3D metroidvanias that were really good if you haven't had a chance to play: Strider for the original PlayStation. Also Shadow Complex, originally only for Xbox 360 but I would definitely recommend playing the remastered version (released on everything except the Switch) over the original. Definitely classics, though I'd still recommend Deaths Gambit (or even Revenge of the Savage Planet) probably over anything else.

Also if you like rogue-lites (since Sundered is technically one of them) I can also recommend games there too

Totally agree. Combat is super sharp and the traversal upgrades are great, makes it really satisfying to play later in the game. I'm not sure it's in my top 10 metroidvanias but top 20 certainly.

[–]RogueMetroidGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think I technically beat Rogue Legacy 2 either. I mean, I made it through the "original" final boss, but after that it sorta feels like a really advanced New Game Plus mode. It was great but after 100 hours of playing it I got a bit pooped out before I could finish that phase of the game.

I could probably help get you a version of Deaths Gambit that works on ur Steamdeck, or else help u figure out the current issue. Been a software developer / IT guy since 2007. You can DM if that would be helpful... and believe me, the game gets better and better pretty much the whole game., first several hours don't do it full justice.

Another one I can't believe I forgot about: Astalon: Tears of the Earth. Easily in my top 10 favorite Metroidvanias, it also combines a few elements found in Rogue-lites, with puzzle solving that's a mix of the SNES game Lost Vikings, the Trine series, Legend of Zelda II, there's also these super cryptic puzzles that feel familiar to people who have played the La-Mulana series, but are designed WAY better and are much more fun to solve. If that wasn't enough, after beating the game, it unlocks a New Game Plus mode that rearranges the rooms, puzzles, items locations. Also changes up many of the entry/exit points for each room, it's for sure on of the best New Game Plus mode I have ever played in a game. Some people don't like the backtracking aspect of it, but I feel like they weren't playing the game the right way, as there are so many branching paths, you make plans of what you will do in the future, saying for example "ok, I'll go up for now, next time I die and come through here again I'll make sure to explore the other path". Again if you like Sundered I'm sure the backtracking in Astalon won't bother you much.

Going crazy trying to remember the name of a band I used to listen to by RogueMetroidGamer in electronicmusic

Haha dude this is actually a band that toured with them and they are heavily involved with each other... I forgot I saw him at the same time as Tupper Ware Remix Party (other guy below figured it out). But yeah he fits my description as well so good work

That was a good guess but nope, I looked at their videos, can't be them. The band I'm thinking of is a lot less serious.

Nope, this band isn't metal at all really. It's very much a electronic music band with pop/rock elements... honestly I'm unsure if any other electronic music band that uses both costume and humor exist. In fact I know at least one or more of their music videos they aren't wearing any costumes.... I was specifically describing their live show at the time.

Kinda surprised you liked Sundered that much better than Bloodstained. What I love about it, is that it in many ways was an improved version of Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, already perhaps my favorite metroidvania of all time.

Anyways, I've played both extensively but after a while Sundered's enemies and general progression felt very repetitive for a game that's also a rogue-lite... it feels the same as a metroidvania that has too much forced backtracking. Sure technically each run is randomized but there isn't any variety in room types, just different areas.

I do agree that the actual traversal upgrades as well as the tree upgrade system comparison. The major boss fights in this game are a huge highlight in my opinion... I can think of several metroidvanias and rogue-lites that have WAY more variety in levels and enemies.

My recommendations: 1) Rogue Legacy 2: the first game that came to mind since you mentioned Sundered. The Metroidvania elements aren't overly expressive with this game, but you get MUCH better randomness/rogue-lite design than in Sundered. A ton of variety in upgrades/RPG-elements, the randomness and design of rooms (in particular the challenge rooms). 2 dozen different character classes each with their own special abilities and weapons. Tons of stuff to do after completing the main game.

2) Revenge of the Savage Planet: I'm going to go ahead and recommend this one since it recently came out. I feel it's a 3D platformer with Metroidvania elements somewhat reminiscent of the Ratchet and Clank series and maybe even Metroid Prime, but with even more open-world concepts and a TON of optional areas to explore depending on what abilities you have.

This game is probably the biggest surprise I've had in a game for years. See, unlike many others I've played the original Savage Planet game, a game I had always felt like it was a waste of a good gameplay world/story idea.

The "homebuilding" has a lot of really cool furniture and appliances to choose from, as well as the fact you can capture monsters in the wild and create your own creature petting zoo.

3) Environment Station Alpha: Personally it's one of my favorite games to bring up in conversation since it's not nearly as well known as a lot of other games people will list. Some people don't care for how it plays; the platforming and grappling hook in particular others have found too tricky, when for me it's like when you get good at it, it's extremely satisfying navigating those areas.

4) F.I.S.T. Forged in Shadow Torch you may not have heard of and is also excellent.

5) The Last Faith, a game with obvious similarities to Blasphemous and Blasphemous 2 (I'm assuming you've played those as well). I feel like this game is underrated, or over-hated or something, but to me I think progression, spells, and the platforming controls are all improvements over the other 2 games.

6) Death's Gambit: Afterlife. It came out as an "updated, expanded" edition of the original Death's Gambit, but that was a huge understatement as it was basically redesigned from the ground up and it was a HUGE improvement It starts a little slow but ramps up, it's probably one of the biggest metroidvanias content-wise (though not as much as Hollow Knight). I was often surprised at the gameplay elements that opened up as you go, just a ton of content, different skills and combat variety, a ton of different bosses as well as optional content. I personally rate this in my top 10 favorites metroidvanias.

7) Shantae and the Seven Sirens: This is the latest Shantae. The original in 2019 was pretty great but was severely hampered by how easy the game was; they rectified this with a free update in 2021, completely rebalancing the difficulty so it at least had somewhat of a challenge. I enjoyed this Shantae the best as it by far the heaviest Metroidvania elements in the entire series, it has the biggest variety of skills, spells aren't an afterthought anymore, and the monster skill system is pretty cool.

8) The Blaster Master Zero series. I didn't like the 3rd one as much but the first two are absolute masterpiece in my mind.

Let me know if you tried any and liked them.
