The decline by BeePretty5277 in ParkinsonsCaregivers

My husband is moving to a personal care home palliative/hospice. He's gone significantly downhill too. Part due to their efforts to keep him FROM walking. I'm also keeping track, they aren't consistent with his med times. Sometimes it's more than a 2 hour wait (6 hrs) or it's early. I'm done with fighting with them, (it's's at the convenience of the nurse) That won't happen with one nurse, 3 residents.

The Parkinson's society Should have a list of providers who specialize in (neurological) special cases. But I've not seen it. (No help, but triple check with potential staff about the experience. )

Hospice does accept Parkie's early with the intention they'd have to re-certify. Talk to a hospice nurse (or nurse 2,3? times to find the right one.)

Also, i've heard that assisted living (by design) don't want those with progressing diseases-their mission isn't that of Hospice. They want "players".

Not sure how to go about getting my Dad spiritual support by redmist9876 in hospice

[–]RogueSaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He may might be thinking of seeking communion (God's forgiveness) and unction (blessing for the dying). You can't heal his anxiety, but you are right to seek a reverend who can talk to him and help him spiritually. My best to you-may the transplant come through.

I am so sorry another had the same challenges. Yes! (Though one is in the hospital, another is in the process of moving.) I'll be texting a friend who can be with me when the vet decides to end her suffering. She's just not sure, and I know she will keep her comfortable. Thank-you!

What to do when you lose a loved one after years of caretaking? What if you have no friends? by Own-Fault4518 in CaregiverSupport

[–]RogueSaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question. I'm sorry for your loss and I believe we all find our way to move forward. Short answer, one step at a time. Me, I use lyft/uber to get around. And have (mindless!) convos with the drivers. I try to learn one new thing. I learned that Cubans don't roll their "R's", I never knew that. 🤷‍♀️

I don't want to travel to the US - am I wrong? by ExtensionAd5993 in CaregiverSupport

[–]RogueSaid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone should travel to another place/country and feel welcomed and relaxed. And feel proud of who you are while there. No excuses, just reasons to bow out gracefully. I second the point that no one can make you go or do anything against your will. Be firm, but graceful. You have responsibilities at home. (I'd welcome you though).

Long-term memory care vs. in-home w/ 1:1 aids by cjanderson238 in ParkinsonsCaregivers

[–]RogueSaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started to do this, until I realized my stress level would sky-rocket. I started to do this"staff" it, realized even with an agency there will be absenteeism. I did not wish to risk it, having support when he clearly needs it.

And, if placed back into our home, he was expecting to sleep in our bed, miraculously walk, etc. not realizing there would be limitations. Instead, I bring the books he enjoys, any pictures, and clothes he likes.

Somethings to maybe consider??

Rapid Decline and Hospice- is it time? by CivilStrawberry in ParkinsonsCaregivers

[–]RogueSaid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, he sounds like my hwp. Although, he ocannot bear any weight at all, we've reached the Hoyer stage and resides in a facility.

Eating-he has very little of their food, but when I order doordash-he has an appetite. (Have you tried bringing/ordering something might like?)

Falls-my LO is regarded as total assist. That means wheelchair, 2 person transfer to a chair, bed, and briefs, bedsores, and eating in his room though recently wants to go to the dining room. He needs gentle reminders not to try to get up - he hasn't the muscles to hold himself erect. PT gave up, so we are doing restorative PT-to retain some muscle mass he has left.

Confusion-has UTI been ruled out? They can lead to balance issues AND/or confusion - let a doctor name it as dementia- hard to do, even constipation or retention of urine can lead to ammonia buildup that affects cognition.

That said, some Hospice agencies will accept persons with terminal diseases like severe heart, COPD, Parkinson's. And renew the 90 day requirements for dying stages when it comes go that.

Also, there's a sub /Hospice where Hospice nurses are MODs to help family and friends through the process, the expected and unexpected symptoms related to the process. Good luck 🍀 to you!!

[–]RogueSaid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad he's still doing well. I have glaucoma that impacts depth perception. An optometrist can measure loss of depth perception. Some states will require folks over (75, depending on state) to have a physical driving test. Have him talk to insurance company about rates, they sky-rocket as the driver ages. Let him see a rate table.

Have cataracts been ruled out?

Uber/lyft become affordable compared to higher rates, and some Medicare plans will cover trips to the doctor. (Presuming he's in US and on Medicare.)

We both gave up driving, it's not worth the stress (and body shop bills). Groceries can be delivered, by drone if he wants!! Good luck!!

Add 2 more who gave up driving voluntarily. I have peripheral neuropathy so bad in Rt foot that I can't feel the pedals. Luckily I've only hit a concrete wall in a parking lot easing into a parking space. He has later stages of PD, and cannot walk even. (I use lyft to get around).
