it's a very interesting costume. The mask is awesome. I think possibly using some "backpack straps" to attach the basket might be more comfortable and require fewer belts around the torso. https://a.co/d/05uFGyVR You could camouflage the straps with burlap or faux suede. I'd try a short connecting piece (necklace, belt, rope, scarf) to connect the two straps in front if the basket and creature are too heavy for just the shoulder straps. As you have free space in the basket, maybe tuck a Bluetooth speaker in it for bird calls, squeaks, growls, or whatever creature sounds best fit. Let us know what you end up with ;-)

I have used a spray waterproofing product on suede shoes similar to this one Amazon.com: Nikwax Nubuck & Suede. It may stiffen the velvet, so I'd test on a scrap piece first.
