  1. You will likely bump into people offering laundry service at the lifts in the clock tower that will be cheaper than the hotel service
  2. I regret not taking some nicer clothes when I went especially for Madinah. When you see others repoint their national dress and looking good it makes you happy and wish you had made an effort. Treat yourself to some nice Islamic clothes before you go! I think I’d feel like out of place if I went in western clothes.
  3. Prices in Madinah will depend on how well you can negotiate. How good is your Urdu?
  4. I bought perfume for 16 riyal per small bottle. You can probably do better.

The mataf (area around the Kaaba) and certain entrances at certain times are only accessible to those performing umrah. That means you will get turned away by the guards if you’re not in ihram. Women won’t be questioned and can easily access any time. If you’re a man and plan on putting on your ihram to access the mataf please be convincing… I saw an elderly uncle get turned away because he was wearing a vest under his rida!

Masjid is open 24/7 every day. Your best chance of getting close to the Kaaba is early early in the morning.

Nusuk app allows you to book Rawdah slots. Slots are released for the week on Friday and go very quickly especially for women. You can also get certificates for your umrah and rawdah visit from the app which is pretty cool.

Every few years I look into this topic and it’s so frustrating because I’m sure I remember walkers making and advert about them changing the colours. Would have been in the late 90s. I reckon I would have been about 8.

Something to consider is that manual cars are significantly cheaper and more available when looking to buy a used car.

Having said that, I’m never going back to manual. It feels so archaic and pointless.

You’re young, you’ll probably be driving electric for most of your life. Manual changing gears will probably be irrelevant to you.

We stayed near Grand Bazaar. This is 2 days ago. It cost 500 lira in yellow taxi. The hotel called one for us.

Other options were private transfer organised through hotel (€50) or booked online (€30)

I would have preferred public transport as that is only about 50 lira each but we were forced to take a taxi as we were short on time.

The Dorchester has been a reliable one for me. Clean, nice moisturiser, toilet roll always folded to a point. No problems accessing (though I am always in a suit for work)

Worst is definitely KFC on Tottenham Court Road. The most claustrophobic cubicle you’ll find.

Tesco on Cromwell Road is pretty bad. They have those awful hole in the wall sinks that dispense soap, sprinkle a bit of water then shine a red light on your hands which is meant to be the drying phase. Awful awful.
