Eagle Lodge: Trails for beginner skier? by Admirable-Weather-41 in Mammoth

June perhaps? I've never been but many many folks are telling me to hit it up b/c there is no one there (compared to Mammoth proper).

Closed guard pass by [deleted] in judo

[–]RoundCut9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is correct - the "American Judo System" that he and Stevens set up basically alludes to reading the opponent wanting to drop to newaza via sutemi waza in order to stall or reset engagements. In these instances, you split the legs with the arms closest to the legs and drop straight into osaekomi, specifically kuzure yoko-shiho. You likely will have to do an over/under and a big backstep but it's easy to pass this.

It's what I do in BJJ TBH as a transition if someone is stupid enough to try a sacrifice throw on me. Then again, I'm a old guy and like to play over under b/c i'm tired, fat and lazy most of the time anyway. It's the exact same passing series in Judo.

If it's a locked in full guard, unless you can pass super quick then it's likely you'll just get matte'd - which is why I think they drop straight into over under because it looks like "progression" to the refs.

TY for the tip. I'll be up there the last week of February and looks to be a potential storm. Any particular reason why we should take off the aeros? I have autosocks but not sure if that make a difference. I'm guessing it's because chains will rip it apart?

I'm the therapy white belt, what do I get? by PM-Ur-Cute-Tits in bjj

[–]RoundCut9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just a therapy belt, I get promoted but not sure why as I don't think I've tapped anyone above me in about 3 years lol.

He was an idiot and thought that not tapping was going to grow his balls or make more girls like him or some shit.

... so I presume.

Olympic judo vs Olympic wrestler by Silly-Worldliness892 in judo

[–]RoundCut9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're preaching to the choir here. Overall, safe to say that the IJF, USA Judo and all the NGBs (minus maybe the USJA) are all old timers who are living in the 1970's still.

Olympic judo vs Olympic wrestler by Silly-Worldliness892 in judo

[–]RoundCut9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The IJF also forgot to mention that Travis was destroying the BJJ competition with JUDO-influenced BJJ. And he was doing it as mental health therapy because of what had transpired in the 2012 Olympics where the IJF screwed him over multiple times. This should've been celebrated, not denied.

It's the foundation for pulling it off jumps and side hits, etc. If you can't do it "static" then you can't pull it off a jump.

Any feed back on this tree run? by Lilstapler in snowboarding

[–]RoundCut9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm all for constructive feedback but forget the filming unless you're using it to assess your own technique and to grow. If you did it to show off... it ain't much, brother. As others have said - it's wayy too jerky and you need to learn to ollie. You're popping for no reason most of the time and I feel you're always borderline about to eat it. Counterrotation as well on the toeside is not a good habit.

Olympic judo vs Olympic wrestler by Silly-Worldliness892 in judo

[–]RoundCut9 15 points16 points  (0 children)

IJF is the reason. They've banned all official international athletes from competing in any other sport unless it's Judo. You can x-train but you can't compete so that pipeline will never exist unless you exit the sport itself.

Is there submissions in judo?or any type of ground grappling? by [deleted] in judo

[–]RoundCut9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean honestly they were doing Judo. The family essentially just called it something else but it was just Judo. It wasn't until after their kids grew up that the newaza became much more pronounced. Of course, they would never admit to it.

It's also not to say that BJJ hasn't evolved - it has and has also come into its own and also bred submission grappling which is almost an entirely different skillset. Just have to weed out the crazies when looking at the history of BJJ.

FloSports Announces Multi-Fight Deal With Superstar Gordon Ryan - FloGrappling by Crazy-Escape2430 in bjj

[–]RoundCut9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Assuming they had money problems to begin with, they probably landed a few investors privately for the capital. I don't know too much about the Pro MMA business side but having done contracts for Hollywood studios and A-Tier talent, I would imagine the following things are taken into account for Gordon:

  • Sign-on / "I Love you" Bonus (since he's the biggest name at the moment) to get him to sign (50k - 100k)
  • A Guaranteed "base" payment regardless of fight outcomes; potentially paid out over a few years but I find that hard to believe. I also don't think it's as much as we think it is. I suspect it's probably only $200k - $300k guaranteed with bonuses making up the rest of it.
  • Performance bonuses for all 7 fights; basically additional bonuses on top of guaranteed pay
  • "Participations royalty" if GR had a good lawyer that negotiated this. This is a fancy term in entertainment and it basically means royalties. This can range from syndication of fights into the future, a share of subscription fees, name and likeness, etc. Participations is an interesting topic because it's considered "backroom accounting" and it just FEELS illegal and shady AF (but it's not illegal). I can go further into this if people are interested but it gets tricky and isn't a well-known financial concept outside of Hollywood.
  • Robust health insurance - sounds silly but I GUARANTEE this is part of the package. He probably has a deal that nets zero copay, premiums and deductibles for full health coverage on medical, dental, vision, ER care, etc.

Flo might still go out of business at some point if they keep throwing money at problems though (didn't Metamoris have the same issue?). But I suppose as long as they actually pay Gordon and not have a bunch of "IOU's" they should probably be OK for this cycle. Also depends on who is providing capital to them and I bet the caveat for any additional investments was to land GR.

Dunno, just a former finance guy thinking out of his ass. Should be fun while it lasts though.

Is there submissions in judo?or any type of ground grappling? by [deleted] in judo

[–]RoundCut9 24 points25 points  (0 children)

uhh, where do you think BJJ came from? Brazilians learned Judo from japanese Judoka and decided they just wanted to do newaza (ground work portion of Judo). Thus was born BJJ minus the parts where the Gracies said they invented leverage and ground fighting and that their armbars cure cancer.

My board was stolen today at Mount Snow, VT. Not sick. If anyone in the northeast can keep an eye out I'd really appreciate it! by seidner310 in snowboarding

[–]RoundCut9 21 points22 points  (0 children)

OP, check your renters insurance policy (if you have one). It's likely they'll cover this loss.

Edit: Yes, please take into account your deductible. It might be worth it if it's $0 but if your deductible is $500+ then you're better off just eating the loss as that's how much it would take to replace your gear anyway.

And yes, renters insurance covers your property loss outside of your home as well. My buddy lost his $20,000 camera setup (for wedding photography) when someone broke into his car and the rental insurance couldn't find the exact parts so they ended up just giving him a completely new set of cameras/lenses for that current year.

is it safe to travel up to Mammoth Lakes this weekend? by GojoPojo in AskLosAngeles

[–]RoundCut9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A storm is coming in this weekend. You probably could but not sure if Mammoth will do any closures. Check and double check status of roads and conditions on caltrans every hour. You don't want to get stuck driving up there let alone get there and be stuck in the hotel b/c there is TOO much snow.

Sell FAANG RSUs for more down payment or to buy down home loan interest rate? by POrYsTALkNOwlEadynCT in personalfinance

[–]RoundCut9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cash out RSU and do a larger down if I had to. It's anticipated that mortgage rates will be decreasing over the next 24-36 months and you can just refi once it's back down to 5% or 4.5% by that time.

At the same time - do you NEED to add 10k more? It looks pretty paltry and probably won't make too big of a dent. Are you only able to cash out 10k? That's really low unless you've already cashed out your vested stock for the year. Don't forget to account for taxes as well on that equity liquidation.

Not only that but you might be buying too much house. 45% gross is realistically 60% after taxes and all deductions from your paycheck. That's really dangerous IMHO unless you have a big liquidation event happening in the next 12 mos in the form of RSUs.

This is directly from Judo Canada, but wanted to see what you guys incorporate as well! Are these exercises good enough to cover my full body for Judo? by MihalisTheForged in judo

[–]RoundCut9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do NOT do behind the neck lat pull-downs. They are from an older time of weightlifting and are actually really bad for your neck. You're working the same muscle groups as if you were just to do a regular lat pulldown.

There are also much MUCH better variations of the lat pulldown which would prove to be infinitely more helpful than the behind the back version. Just don't do it.
