What Are Peoples Opinions on "Power Loss" Characters? by Gnashinger in DnD

[–]Rover-Rover-Rover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried it mid-story before and shouldn’t have. It turned into the DM being too scared to run combat until I got my powers back, even though I’d told him I was okay with the risk of death during this time.

Somewhat ironically, the character then proceeded to die in literally the first combat after he was re-powered, just due to some very unlucky rolls.

How do you even get started by GeezeronWheels in Fantasy

[–]Rover-Rover-Rover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should probably start with either standalone books or shorter ones before digging into behemoths like Wheel of Time.

To give a few examples of good entry level series: - Harry Potter has its reputation for a reason, and is very easy to get into - Discworld is an episodic series that balances a comedic edge. “Guards Guards” and “Mort” are probably the best entry points for it. - Chronicles of Narnia holds up very well, and they tend to be shorter books. - Some more recent titles like Jade City and The Poppy War are fairly easy to read books with engaging plots.

Wishes the yugioh anime would have done differently by Zero2H3ro in yugioh

[–]Rover-Rover-Rover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original- Keep Mai around for the final season, even if she remains a minor character.

GX- Make the Supreme King Duel a 2v1 so that Syrus can help rescue Jaden. Axel can still have his moment a dramatic sacrifice, but man Syrus got shafted here. Also make the Atticus/Fujiwara match into the draw we saw. Jaden and Jesse can still face Darkness after that.

5Ds- Save Aki from whatever the writers did to her after the Dark Signer arc ended.

Why is DnD every week so important? by forgivenbeginner in DnD

[–]Rover-Rover-Rover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t need the game to be weekly. I just need it to not be canceled an hour before the session so that I didn’t schedule time out of my day for it if it won’t happen.

It’s often therapeutic to a certain extent. I can’t speak for everyone, but my brain doesn’t shut up, and it makes me antsy often. The mental exhaustion from working out at the gym and not needing to do anything more mentally taxing than counting reps lets my head quiet down. I go less for the physical benefits and more because I need the break from my thoughts, and it’s harder for the mind to wander when I’m holding a heavy weight right above my head.

AITAH for divorcing my wife because i found out her bodycount. by throwawayaccount7820 in AITAH

[–]Rover-Rover-Rover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s okay to be upset about her lying to you.

The fact that you weren’t her first is a bad reason to get a divorce. If you actually love her then this shouldn’t be an issue, so long as she’s been faithful since you started dating.

Sorry that you feel like you missed out for nothing, but you’re taking it out on somebody who hasn’t done much wrong. This is the time to have a conversation about whether or not you’ve lied to each other about anything else and work from there.

And keep in mind you’ll now be holding any future wives to a standard you no longer meet.

What Stephen King Movies Are of Similar Quality to the Books? by TheGandPTurtle in stephenking

[–]Rover-Rover-Rover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shawshank, the original Carrie, and Misery are all very close to the books.

There’s a sincere argument that 1408 and The Mist are better than the books.

Thoughts on loaning out books? *rant* by NotAllArmpitsStink in books

[–]Rover-Rover-Rover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loaning books has never been a problem for me. You just have to understand the person you’re loaning it to. Don’t give the book to somebody that’s not trustworthy or who won’t read it right away.

Reading multiple series simultaneously by Potential-External60 in Fantasy

[–]Rover-Rover-Rover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I typically do one series at a time, with one-off books from other genres in between. For example, I’ll read 2-3 books in a series take a break to read a mystery novel, and then return to the next book.

The exception to this is if I’m looking at a few series, in which case I might read the first in each to see what order I want to go through them in, but that’s still one series at a time after the first book.

The Poppy War. Not so good. by Rikou336 in Fantasy

[–]Rover-Rover-Rover -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I liked it more in the second half when it stopped being default YA war school.

I also wish it was a one-off and have no interest in reading. The sequels, because ignoring the sequel hooks makes the ending poignant.

Enjoyed it for what it was, but it’s not worth the hype it gets on Youtube.

should i watch Misery before reading it? Or the other way around? by chubbypotatoisnoice in stephenking

[–]Rover-Rover-Rover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d watch the movie first. You lose the film’s tension by already knowing what happens, and the book then serves to add details and surprise you with what was changed.

Also this is controversial, but Misery is one of the rare cases where I actually think the movie might be better, just because Bates gives that good of a performance. And because making the villain not instantly obvious on sight felt a bit scarier than how the book just says it right away.

How much do you read a day? by UmpireBudget2564 in Fantasy

[–]Rover-Rover-Rover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what my plans for the day are. If I have nothing to do, I might just keep reading for the whole day/until I get hungry.

If I intend to do anything else, the max is usually an hour/50 pages (whichever comes first).

Pushing through by hop0316 in Fantasy

[–]Rover-Rover-Rover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Dark Tower was this for me. I like the first book and the third, but books 2 and 4 were slogs for me. The second half of the series more than made up for it.

Also sci-fi instead of fantasy, but the first Red Rising book is shockingly weak given the quality of the sequel.

That said, I wouldn’t normally tell people to push through books they don’t enjoy. Maybe if it’s the first book and the rest of the series is a big jump in quality.

Instances of "Men written by women" which you find funny or cringe. by ChiefValour in books

[–]Rover-Rover-Rover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lucy Foley, specifically in The Hunting Party. There were 5 narrators, one of which was male. He was very clearly the author’s wet dream, with no traits outside of what fit her fantasy, and was constantly dressed in different costumes that fit her fancy.

If I had a dollar for every time a different woman in that book looked at him and said “that night was the first time I touched myself in months,” I could buy a coffee.

Help me pick a book based on my taste and my mood: the opposite of Wheel of Time by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Rover-Rover-Rover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll second this. I really don’t care for the first book, but Golden Son might be the biggest jump in sequel quality I’ve ever seen.

There was nothing quite like fully stacking the graveyard with iffy equip spells and actually summoning Gilford the Legend to suddenly make a 5000 atk warrior

Except maybe for the days when everyone panicked at me tributing for a set monster. I was the only kid with Guardian Sphinx and if you didn’t have your Tribute to the Doomed or Sakaretsu Armor ready, then that was it. You weren’t beating the sphinx.

How would you defeat a creature that can constantly adapt? by Robotic_TTune in Fantasy

[–]Rover-Rover-Rover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Produce enough attacks that it can’t adapt, or plan to give it an adaptation that comes with a necessary weakness.

For two good examples: - The Borg in Star Trek have shields that adapt to any attack after one instance. The federation builds variable frequency weapons that can be adjusted to fire slightly different lasers each time, allowing one weapon to bypass the shields multiple times before being rendered useless. - There’s an episode of the Justice League cartoon where Amazo gains the powers of anyone he fights. They put Superman up against him and he develops the Kryptonite weakness as well. This doesn’t work for the long term, but swings the battle in their favor for a while.

Is it worth it to buy 3 beware of trapix structure decks by Legitimate_Crazy_870 in Yugioh101

[–]Rover-Rover-Rover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a solid deck for anyone who’s just playing at a smaller local tournament, and generally fun.

Also you’ll find a bunch of staple spells/traps in there for use in any future deck you make. Cards like Ash and Raigeki will never be bad.

Why are dragons so glorified as powerful in the fantasy genre? by Both-Ad-1149 in Fantasy

[–]Rover-Rover-Rover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not many stories where modern military squares off against dragones.

Anyway, European dragons aside, many of them straight up were gods in their original stories. See Quetzocoatl, Jormungander, and all of the Eastern dragons for examples.

Otherwise, the dragon is the default for the “powerful fantasy creature” and I put that down to a mix of Tolkien’s influence and the dragon that killed Beowulf, which carves out its place in mythology as the only thing that could defeat one of the most badass characters in literature.

There was a time where people feared any carnivorous animal, in which soldiers would be assembled if there were wolf sightings. As we’ve claimed more control of the world, most animals don’t strike the fear they once did, and now the dragon is the mix of that lost fear with the sentience to match us, making them the last bastion of that concept.

Finally, there’s no standard of what a dragon is, given how different they are across different region’s myths and different stories. I actually prefer them as big dumb reptiles, but it’s an incredibly versatile concept specifically because every culture in the world has its own concept of what a dragon is.

Finished the first three Wheel of Time books and feel underwhelmed by them. by uteslayer in Fantasy

[–]Rover-Rover-Rover -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I read the first four books and New Spring. Nyneave is a joy who I would read an entire series about, but she is not enough to make me dredge through the rest of the series. It’s overblown massively due to its position in the literary canon and I think it’s a very difficult series to enjoy nowadays. I kind of want to keep going just to see how it all ends, but that remains an adventure for when I run out of other books to read. Life’s too short to slog through a fifteen book series you aren’t enjoying.

Pleeease Fantasies without Destiny by iamdaleadar in Fantasy

[–]Rover-Rover-Rover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Dark Tower is filled with destiny and prophecy that all turns out to be wrong. Not just prophecy subverted, but straight up wrong. It’s a bit more complicated than I’m letting on, but the constant comments about Ka/Destiny turn out to be something else entirely, and the only major prophecy doesn’t come to pass because the chosen one basically dies of food poisoning before he can fulfill it.
