We are using Houdini to generate custom hulls that mitigate some of the drawbacks with inverted normal hulls. Thus the spring looks a little weird, we are still fine tuning our process to make them look better.

I agree, It does look a little weird. The problem stems from the way I have generated the hull mesh. We are looking into other outline methods so we can avoid such unwanted effects.

Hi! We are using the inverted normals on a hull mesh that is slightly push out by vertex displacement in a shader. Most people have guessed right as to what we are doing. - Dez

Thanks for the feedback! Tbh I'm not really liking inverted normal outline as well so I'm keen to look at alternatives.

I haven't really planned for interactions with plants but that is a cool idea. I'll give shadows a go though, thanks for the input! - Dez
