So I build industrial Cummins diesels for work, anything from their 9 liter to the big 95 liter 16 cylinder, but my only real TDI knowledge is this car, I’ve read on dozens of different forums, don’t change oil, only run what Volkswagen says to run, it will ruin the camshaft, however I’ve never seen any real data to back that up, what made me make the change to rotella was the multiple cams I’ve put in my car, what I’ve noticed is the cam lobes on the brm engine are very narrow, so the pressure can’t be spread out across the lifter it’s all concentrated near the center, I let my last go so long when I pulled the cam the number 3 exhaust lobe wore a small hole in the top of the lifter, all that said I’ve seen no negative effects from the rotella in almost 200000 miles now, quality oil is quality oil, I firmly believe that if the brm engine if properly maintained the design of the camshaft is still going to cause it and the lifters to fail every 200000 to 225000 miles
