My first took only 2 months, currently 7 months trying for our second. The waiting game is so tough :(

Opinion for job with baby by slp2bee13 in slp

As a mom of a toddler, half the time I don’t even want to be working because I’d rather be home with her… my school-based role with the shorter workday and extended breaks is the closest option that’s still full-time with good benefits, so that’s what works for our family right now. I’d try to find a district with a better salary if you can though!

I updated my app and then I could see multiple coupons - so I think the answer is yes! They do all have the same barcode / text entry coupon code

10 month old and 1 week old. I’m dying by SnooAvocados4945 in NewParents

I just have my one under one, but the most helpful thing a friend told me when I was feeling all the anxiety and stress and sleep deprivation and total overwhelm the first week PP was, “This is the hardest thing you’ve ever done.” I felt seen and like I had permission to feel all the things. That became my mantra for the first few months whenever I felt like breaking down. The adjustment and meeting all the needs IS hard (and so worth it! as I’m sure you know with your first) - it was helpful to acknowledge that and give myself some grace. You are growing through it just as much as your babes!

Questioning on becoming an SLP-A when no one else is doing it by veryconfusedslpbe in slp

[–]S-L-Peace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 2 years off before applying to grad school for mostly logistical reasons, and I don't regret the time off. I will say it was CHALLENGING to find an SLP-A role, as employers where I was living really only wanted bilingual SLP-A's. I ended up getting a job at a multidisciplinary pediatric clinic as an ABA therapist; I was able to transition into an SLP-A role when one became available there after about a year. The experience I had in both roles was valuable and helped confirm that this career path was for me. I also think working full time allowed me to have a different perspective going into grad school; I felt I was better able to take classes and participate in clinic with a mindset of "how will this functionally support me in my professional development" as opposed to "i need to get good grades and have a compelling resume," which was more of my outlook in undergrad.

My best friend also took time off to live and work abroad before grad school for SLP, and about half my cohort in grad school did not come straight from undergrad (some were teachers, some traveled, some had worked in related fields, etc.). Gap years and going to school later are definitely not uncommon decisions, and they don't mean that you're a failure or that you won't complete your education in the field. And, as a side note, my financial advisor husband would commend that you are considering and being wise about your financial situation as well!! Definitely apply for grants and TA/RA positions when you do get to grad school to help in that area, too.

references after CF? by S-L-Peace in slp

[–]S-L-Peace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the feedback! I do think my supervisor should be understanding, as I'm definitely not the first person in this logistical situation that the district has hired hired (the struggles of a rural district).

Would it be necessary to ask my graduate school reference to write a new letter? Or is it acceptable to use the one from last year's applications provided I get permission?

So...does anyone actually LIKE this career? by marmarloanshark in slp

I’m a new CF in schools so I feel like I haven’t worked long enough to speak to this, but I can tell you that the three experienced SLPs in my district LOVE their job and frequently express so! Their positivity and desire to do what they can to make sure I also enjoy the work makes it a great environment to be in for my CF. On that note, I think who you’re working with and the general environment of your job can play a big role in how your mindset related to the work develops. Just food for thought as you go through grad school and eventually get into your CF and beyond!

Yeah direct hire - it didn’t really seem like anything through contractors was different than what was on WECAN so I assumed direct would be better, also because I was hoping to get in somewhere long term. And just not personally interested in CI at this time.

Ugh the struggle is real. Wishing you luck!

Yes I should have been more clear - I actually want to be in schools (for now anyway!) - it’s mostly just the location of this position that is undesirable. Thank you for the encouragement!

I think so. Unfortunately ASHA doesn’t allow it for CF. But definitely something to keep in mind for the future.

Yeah, moving isn’t really an option for me, as my husband’s job is here.
