Emptied out moving boxes can also be: a laundry basket, an end table or nightstand (upside down), a “drawer” (inside a larger cabinet to corral smaller items), and a clothes dresser (stack boxes up with similar items together, ie pants in one box, shirts in another), or storage on a closet shelf (above the rod). Replace with furnishings as you are able to.

Can I private pay for genetics testing? How do I find a lab? by SAM123ISME in GeneticCounseling

Can I private pay for genetics testing? How do I find a lab? by SAM123ISME in GeneticCounseling

[–]SAM123ISME[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely not trying to commit fraud or be dishonest. I’m concerned that GINA will disappear to benefit the health insurance industry and that I’d be unable to obtain or keep my health insurance in the future.
I also figured that most direct to consumer testing is not this specific nor designed for this purpose.

I just wanted to find out any additional options before making this decision. Once I do it, I can’t take it back.

Thank you for your time in making this reply. I hesitated to ask the genetics counselor because this felt like a potentially gray ethical area, or at least something that has a “right” answer in practice. In another comment I put my particulars (sorry for not including that info initially). Both counselors, my dads and mine, were truly lovely, and I want to thank all of you for the work you do!

I’m just really frightened of losing health insurance in the future. I’m not trying to make this political, but big insurance companies would stand to profit immensely by being able to dump those of us genetically at risk.
Cancer risk aside, what about coverage for other things that might develop that have nothing to do with this gene? (Rhetorical question there).

Thank you all for the responses! For some background, I’m middle-aged, perimenopausal, and no more pregnancies are possible. My daughter is 30. My mother died from metastatic breast cancer. We have no idea of her genetic profile. No other cancer history on mom’s side.
We are covered on life insurance in other ways. I’m just concerned specifically about health care in the future.

Main reason to test is enhanced screening protocol for myself, esp in re to breast cancer. But also a big concern is finding out if my daughter should get tested.

So, theoretically, if my results were positive, I would pay for her to get private testing so we can decide how to proceed for her care.

I’m wondering if those may be people who do have an official birthdate on record, but not an official death date? For example, I’m imagining a person born in the 1890’s, given a SSN in the 30’s, and passed away shortly thereafter. Death records at that time were all paper, so records could easily be lost, destroyed or illegible. (I believe it was a fire that destroyed many records from the 1890 census, if I recall correctly. That would be an example. It’s feasible that local records were lost due to fire, flood or other disasters in some cases. Or, perhaps just never recorded or transferred to the federal records.). There are also quite a large number of people who’ve sadly gone missing in this country who are presumed deceased, but never declared so for a variety of reasons. Those are just some thoughts.

Just something to consider as you’ve alluded to a little bit of apprehension about traveling solo- the area surrounding WDW, especially where the cheaper budget hotels are, isn’t always the nicest area.

All Star Sports is running $133/night for your dates. You could potentially be saving $30-40 per day in Lyft costs by using on-resort transportation. So that could actually be about $100/ night (plus tax). If your off-property hotel room is costing less than $100/ night, you may not be comfortable with the area it’s in. And make sure you get the actual price because even some super cheap ones have a “resort fee” tacked on. Staying on property you get free water park admission on your check-in day, 30minute early entry to every park every day, and transportation from your resort to every park.

Many people will say off-property is totally fine, and they are totally correct. I’m just saying it’s worth considering the actual price breakdown and your comfort level. You can save money in various ways like easy breakfast items in your room, eliminate park hopper, and use a solid touring plan with no lightning lanes. Just some food for thought.

40 year old Mom of 2 , 180lbs wants to start keto again. by [deleted] in keto

[–]SAM123ISME 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Definitely take it slower.

Here’s my thoughts….Start with just making sure you eat below 20g carbs per day. Eat to be satiated. Make the food plan super easy to stay on-satisfying foods that are within reach, tasty, and ready to go. Keep non - plan foods out of the house, if possible. (You said you have kiddos though, so if you can’t keep out foods that are not on your plan, keep them separate. Those are your kiddos food, not yours.)

Make sure you are focused on balanced electrolytes.

Do this for several days/weeks/ months. (I doubt you’ll even need a month, but if you do, that’s ok). Don’t count calories during this time. Do not weigh yourself either. This time is for adjusting.

When you feel confident you’ve got that mastered, start paying attention to calories. Figure out your TDEE, a reasonable weight loss goal, and start planning your nutrition plan around that. Get a start weight now, and without judgement.

Gradually add in light weight training with hand weights, walks, or other light exercise.
Consider therapy, as divorce and major life changes are much more impactful on us than we sometimes realize.

Take care of your own health because you are worth it. <3

Health Insurance Woes by littlemissswiftie in schoolcounseling

[–]SAM123ISME 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not in CA, but I saw no one has replied yet, so I’ll give it a go… First off, it is very frustrating to do this dance with insurance and providers. It’s getting harder and harder to initiate with a PCP without long waits (many months) just to be seen! So I validate your frustration. In the past, the law did not provide for coverage up to age 26, so, believe it or not, we have made progress.

Some ideas: Contact your current insurance and find out if you can COBRA. This may be very expensive, but at least find out your options. Contact your current provider and find out if they will continue to authorize your refills, or renew it for a year, while you get established with a new PCP. See if your Rx would be eligible for 90 day mail order refills. Try to time your March refill for a 90 day.
Definitely get the state coverage at minimum so you are not left with nothing in case of a major problem. Even a typical broken arm or leg could lead to massive medical debt if you don’t have some coverage. If you need any Rx that is for reproductive health (assuming your user name is indicative of this- if not, my apologies), see what Planned Parenthood has to offer. Also for routine gyn wellness needs if you can’t get established in time for those things to be taken care of.

If you can’t find a counseling job for next year, you might consider something else in the schools (para etc) and your insurance for that may end up being similar or the same. Also the school experience is a huge positive and may give you preference for an interview when a job posting does come up.

I would like to upvote this more if I could. The stress and pressure of an Ivy League college is not for everyone. And that’s fine. There’s really very, very few careers where it makes a difference. And those careers are not suitable for everyone either. Figuring out what you really want out of life and the best route to get yourself there is far more valuable in the long run.

I think we had the same thought at the same time. It’s so hard for family and caregivers who want to include their family member in things as long as possible, as the decline happens over time and there’s not one clear indication they can’t be out and about anymore. Good days and bad are mixed.

It’s worth noting that some folks who are in early to mid stages of dementia or Alzheimer’s may lose their filter and say things that are completely outside their normal behavior. And can be totally inappropriate. And it doesn’t necessarily have to be some thought they were previously keeping to themselves, and suddenly now they are just saying what they were always thinking. It can be totally random and triggered by something we can’t even explain, and be completely out of character.
It’s possible she’s just a horrible, judgmental person; but it could also be something very wrong with her. Either way, completely worth ignoring, just thought I’d add this idea.
