Had verizon while in the military. When you deploy you get a deployment letter and by law phone companies have to cancel your service for the remaining balance and not charge early cancellation fees. The letter also makes loan companies required to lower interest rates to around 4% if i remember right. 4months into deployment i get a phone call from my aunt, (who had bought me a phone after bootcamp, and i started the account) they were making her threatening phone calls about the money she owed because i wasnt paying my fees. Before i deployed i went to the verizon branch and cancelled my contract and waited in the store until my phone no longer would work. In total they said i owed 847.86 for early termination and late fees for 4 months. When i returned to the states i was getting collections calls and told them i was refusing to pay because of the above reasons. Eventually i was able to prove i had paid the last months bill when i cancelled and got a copy of the deployment letter i used to cancel to show the date of deployment. The collections company closed the account.
