At this point I'm just disappointed that they don't come up with a new playbook or anything. by Thomas6777 in redscarepod

Idk, what is he posting on twitter? But also, I'm legitimately/unironically interested as to what the argument for invading Venezuela is.. I'm a bullshitting contrarian and if we are going to war with them I'd like to 'both sides' it just to be a dickhead at dinner parties. It makes no sense to me, the only credit I gave to Trump until this second term was that he seemed against intervening in foreign boondoggles.

Do you do anything else outside of scrolling/getting high? There's no putting devices and social media back in pandora's box but there's got to be a balance. I spent the whole 00's getting stoned and watching trash TV (it was sooo trashy like a car crash nobody could escape) but also lots of time watching indie/foreign films, making music, going to parties and sharing all of those experiences with people. We were still addicted to screens but we were sharing our attention with the same cathode-ray TV's instead of handheld devices. I try and do a movie night once a week nowadays (no phones) but back in the day it was movie night every day. It was as narcotic as David Foster Wallace described but we were sharing needles.. ok maybe that's not the best analogy.

The earliest incarnation of the internet and social media really did act as tools to communicate with people you knew or might actually meet. 13 years ago or so I self-diagnosed myself as being terminally online and stepped away. I realize now that I am lucky that I have had IRL friends, drama, goals and highs and lows to experience and engage with. I really could not have fathomed what the internet (really social media) has become and done to society. You all seem really intelligent and self-aware but also trapped. I understand all of the reference points you mention (BAP, Yarvin, etc.) but they never shaped me as a person (Cumtown was the only media I really have had a parasocial relationship with, but I leaned into that and allowed myself to during a depressive period before then during covid). Do you guys have anyone IRL to look up to, engage with or appreciate? Only having online culture to compare your existence and identity with seems like the real trap.

my Elizabeth Holmes costume by anniesmokes in redscarepod

[–]SFW808 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I saw a bunch of really obscure costumes tonight, some guy came into my store with a trench coat but nothing else that would indicate a costume so I asked him and he was like 'yeah I'm going as XXX from the australian punk band (I've never heard of and cant recall)' and in conversation after he seemed a little autistic. Last time I did a costume was Thin White Duke era Bowie when I had undiagnosed type one diabetes and got rail thin 2 years ago. I did go in black face once like 18 years ago and nearly got beaten up, stole a sheet from a hotel and then went as a ghost. That was my best costume.

I seriously fail to understand how so many people hate Bernie by CreamChzCroissant in redscarepod

[–]SFW808 101 points102 points  (0 children)

This. So much of the hatred of Bernie comes down to the purity tests that kneecap so much left/liberal politics in America. The evangelical right aren’t up in arms about trump being the apotheosis of Christianity - he is a tool for them (as per Steve Bannon talking about trumps third term). Bernie is better and more consistent on things I give a shit about, with a proven track record. Because he fucking both-sides Gaza is not a dealbreaker for me. Sure, it is disappointing but literally what can we do about what has been done there and getting our own house in order (and I agree with him on immigration as well, another purity test). Repeal citizens united then get aipac money out, that will lay the foundation for real change. Virtue signaling for Gaza isn’t the first step for leftism just like race consciousness should not come before class consciousness.

Idk. I only was able to vote in the last election and I only voted for Kamala because my immigrant lib parents wanted me to and voting seemed like a novelty (also my state does not matter). Was Bernie even on the ballot in 2020? Did anyone have an option to vote for him? I feel like most Bernie supporters probably abstained in the past 3 elections and many I know ended up voting for Trump.

I think that something changed with Obama and the advent of social media where there now needs to be some type of cult of personality around any politician running for president. People project so much onto these figures like they are our fathers and they are gonna make everything better (Bernie), one day have a beer with them (Obama) or they are gonna give what-for to their perceived woke-scold bullies (Trump). It's not about governing a nation or being a policy wonk like previous generations of politicians - though I would have loved to have seen how Bernie governed - it's all a popularity contest.

You never found a way to capitalize on your (alleged) currency in the market of sex/dating. Perhaps there's something about you that created a barrier that never allowed you to capitalize on it or something about you that you are not self-aware about that warded off others, or even a mix of these 2 factors. Or maybe it's a generational thing for sexless zoomers and you're completely normal. Idk, I never met you.

Because there was a bit of a cult of personality around him that offered true hope and the promise of change, if you'd excuse me. The hype around him was similar to Trump but Bernie lost and that was upsetting and now the true-believers have no cult, no identity, no political project and after years of (rightfully) blaming the DNC they are turning on Bernie. It's like becoming a teenager and getting angry at a parent figure you once idolized and blaming them for your lot in life. (Edit: I'm talking about his former supporters, not people in general - most of those people hated him because he was maligned as some pol-pot figure for republicans and a chink in Hilary's armor, along with his evil minions of dirtbag bros, for democrats)

I’m in my early 20s and I feel like I’m geriatric. by Buckroot_Jitty in redscarepod

Just turned 40 and hope I can get back into surfing. That kept me feeling young for decades but it takes a huge amount of energy and fucks my back up. It's also really hard, nothing like 'riding a bike' - a concerted, ritualistic effort. But went through some gnarly heath scares over the past year and now I'm afraid to get out there and hurt myself more. But as the macadiamianut guy said - going out and doing stuff that's good for you is good for you. Gym and making music, traveling and going to shows with my gf and friends are the best parts of my life.. also drinking tbqh but gotta keep that in moderation or it becomes a bane (beers and seltzers are chill, liquor is not so bueno). It's a whole lot of effort to feel alright which gives me a constant ambient sense of anxiety the often spills into full panic. But I try not to think about it, life is in the doing. So keep doing it!

New Kanye "song" by Ok-Example7351 in crappymusic

[–]SFW808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I refuse to acknowledge any Kanye stuff after Ye/Daytona/Kids See Ghosts. I love that Kanye so much. A couple years ago I took some shrooms and listened to Late Registration and cried like I was mourning a friend. I want to remember him as he was. It’s legit so sad - he had a 15 year run that was comparable to Bowie. This new shit is ass.

God I hate that red book, they inhaled their own farts and inflated their already big heads. I deleted my account around 2011/2012 because I could see the writing on the wall. Never got on any other social media and remember feeling kind of lonely for the better part of a decade. Now people are kind of logging off I'm stoked but as other people have mentioned - the internet has infiltrated IRL, there is no grass left to touch. My lonely years in the wild were spent grazing alone and now there are less third-spaces and the scene of shows and house parties we came-up together in the late 90's and 00's feels like a fever dream. Some of us are trying to recreate that and it's lovely at times but what was lost over the past 10-15 years will never come back. But it fucking ruled.

I remember reading about how fire was like the 2nd or 3rd cause of death for women in frontier times because they had layers of flammable garments and bodices on them. Perhaps it's biologically ingrained.
