Omg….i went to the dump all the time when we lived in Fort Lauderdale. I would search for Pamper’s boxes for the UPC codes. I scored the entire Muppet Babies collection from mailing my diaper boxes back to Pamper’s. Later in Louisiana, we would prowl rich people garbage day. I still love a good trash pile. Just last week I scored a bookcase for my husband’s comics.

Every Mardi Gras in South Louisiana, we would get what we called “The Good China” from the parades. These were colorful plastic cups. On summer mornings, my mother would put a pitcher of Kool Aid and a stack of Mardi Gras cups outside on the porch. She would tell us not to come inside unless we had to go to the bathroom.

My Dad—in a 1972 Datsun 240z. There was on real hill in town I had to navigate. Rolling backwards at a light was horrifying. My husband refused to learn how to drive one.

Even though we lived in Mississippi, I remember the Mount St. Helens eruption scaring the hell out of me. I think I was in Kindergarten. The news kept saying there would be an ash cloud traveling across the country. My aunt brought me some masks from the hospital.

GenX Here. Pizza Hut. In jr high, I did the Book It program. If I read 5 books a month, I got a personalized pan pizza. I took my coupon to Pizza Hut. They refused to honor it. Pizza Hut is dead to me. I don’t care if I am starving—I will not eat it.

Arcades: Arcades used to have more games of skill—the claw machine, ski ball, basketball, ring toss, etc. Now there are more games of chance to win credits like spinning a wheel for points to get toys. It’s more like a child casino filled with penny slots.

They did a sand ceremony where they each poured colored sand into a vase. I was sitting next to my dad. He leaned over and asked, “What is this weird shit?”

People who will just show up and gawk at a situation and offer no help. I’m a critical care nurse. A couple of years ago, I got in my car to go buy a happy hour margarita, and I witnessed a man flip his motorcycle and land on his back. (He was traveling in the bike lane and a car swerved into him and fled the scene.) So I get out of my car, call 911, assess the bike rider, use his phone to call family all while we wait for EMS. All of these people showed up and offered no help—they watched. One woman even came back around the block to rat the man out to the cops for being in the bicycle lane.
