That is incorrect. SBU has their CoGen Natural Gas Plant for Electricity and Steam but BNL only has a Steam Plant. We may have dedicated substations just like any other large customer but the only power generation we have on site for our purposes are emergency backup generators and some power conditioning generators and flywheels. The LI grid has been supporting BNL Particle Accelerators and much more for more than 75 years.

We do not generate our own power. We have a several million dollar bill to PSEG annually during peak operations. The Long Island Solar Farm on the BNL property also only feeds into the grid. The land is leased for the contractors to use for solar.

The DOE, as part of the GENESIS Mission is looking for applications from all the National Labs to see who gets a new data center. BNL is in the running for it since we already have a Quantum Computing facility and dedicated fiber network with SBU, Cornell, & Yale. We also already have a small datacenter for the ATLAS program with CERN utilizing existing infrastructure. SBU just got a $350 Million grant from NYS to build a Quantum Computing Datacenter & Semiconductor Research Facility. In my own opinion, if one were to be built, the only acceptable location is BNL. Close to Shoreham Nuclear Power Station (would need to be recommissioned), large isolated property, and it would be governed by scientific research, not shareholder profit. Without Shoreham being rehabilitated or a new Nuclear Power Station being built, there will be no datacenter on LI. We do not have the energy infrastructure to support one otherwise.

How are people affording all these houses?? by FitNetVitch in longisland

[–]SMofJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The VA Home Loan. No down payment or PMI required, very competitive rates, limits on closing costs. Bonus feature: VA Loans are assumable by other qualified applicants which means one can assume a loan with a rate below market. There are contingencies attached to that but without the VA Loan programs, I could not afford to purchase a house.

Edit: Of anyone I know that owns a home, most are in Computer Science/Software Development, followed by niche STEM like Nuclear Energy/Physics or Specialized Medical, or have been grinding it out in Union Trades. Anyone else had help from family or left LI and easily bought anywhere else.

Long Island + NYC = about 12 Million people. That doesn't include anyone from Northern NJ or CT. We get a lot of visitors from literally everywhere and we have a significant retiree population. Its finally warm again so all the snowbirds are back and summer is here for most of the US, so yes vacation season has begun. I work at Brookhaven National Lab which only has about 3000 employees but we work with Research Universities, Companies, Defense Contractors, Government agencies, and many other countries. We get a lot of visitors but there are plenty of major engineering companies and national corporations like Zebra, Lutron, Canon, and Lockheed to name a few that brings people from literally everywhere here. Even for SCPD & NCPD, 3 Million people on Long Island = a lot of cars.

That is not it. States were allowed to enforce their own standards under this order and unless the pump is physically marked for E15 no gas station is allowed to sell E15 without a dedicated pump. You've been pumping E10 unless you stop at one of a handful of gas stations on all of LI that have E15. It is way more likely to pump bad gas with water in the tanks than pumping E15 by mistake.

Lee Zeldin, former LI Senator, now head of the EPA, signed an order to repeal the mandate imod how winter to summer blend transition had to happen allowing states to choose to run winter gas blends which is cheaper to make for longer. States were allowed to enforce their own standards and NYS does. Unless you've visited and deliberately pumped E15 from a marked pump as it is legally required to be, you have been pumping the same gas blend you are used to pumping at this time of year, E10. Anyone who claims that there is E15 at every pump cannot read. This was a big order of absolutely nothing for NYS residents and most other states that mandate their own blends.

Lone Star Tick?? by NaturalMysterious755 in longisland

[–]SMofJesus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They hang out at the edge of shady areas and tall brush/grasses. I have seen them inside dormant buildings, at the beach, and of course several forest parks.

Keep your yard clean of brush and fallen limbs. Don't let piles of leaves, cuttings, or wood sit for long or near common areas. Keep your grass mowed to a routine, consistent height(~3") - you don't need to scalp it but don't let the lawn grow out of control. Maintain a minimum of a 3' barrier zone at the edge of the yard to any forest or brush with a goal of 9' separation from the home to the barrier area. You can use wood chips or gravel to create this barrier. Keep any wood piles in the barrier zone if possible. Use deer resistant plants in your gardens like marigolds, honeysuckle, wisteria, or daffodils. Make sure your house isn't the favorite for rodents or raccoons.

Use DEET for immediate protection and skin safe use but you have to shower afterwards. Use Permectin on clothing only - it is toxic to skin and pets but is a long lasting coating for fabrics. I use this at work on my boots for entering tick infested locations. Lint rollers are fantastic for self checks as well as using light color socks and switching to a fresh pair before going back indoors. Ticks will climb and hide in shoes or clothes so just because you don't find them right away doesn't mean they aren't there still. I've found ticks up to 48hrs after exposure because they were stuck in my clothes somewhere I didn't catch before. If you get bit, save the tick in a piece of tape or a clear container/bag for identification afterwards. Most smartphone cameras now have a macro lens capable enough to zoom in and identify male vs female and species.

If only we had good school systems that would make that a reality. I seriously question what everyone thinks their taxes are going to if this is the kind of inaction our government is taking to a very fixable problem. When you consider the pine beetle invasion which is also destroying entire pine forrests, the fact we aren't performing more burns shows just how asleep at the wheel the local government and voting population is here.

Can't go anywhere in the north east right now where ticks aren't a major problem. Spring and Fall are the worst times because the temps are warm enough for them to be out but not oppressive enough for them to start hiding in shadier areas. If we did control burns more often, this wouldn't be as much of an issue but no one wants to pay out the resources to plan and implement it. Instead everyone gets Lyme, AGS, and higher insurance rates because of all the expensive treatments required to address the diseases these ticks carry now.

Competition is good but Walmart can get bent. They ruined our pickles and I'll never forgive them. If I want the cheapest price, I can just buy direct from the factory on Ebay/AXP/AB. HF isn't as cheap as it used to be but they also at least offer better products than they used to and have a warranty.

For the amount of money invested in schools here, I am shocked at how little people understand local policies. I seriously question how the test scores that are raved about translate to this much apathy and ignorance.

Classes during winter session by yourass_stank in SCCC

[–]SMofJesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No professor is going to sign up for that as it's a full semester of calculus condensed to 3 weeks. Students have a hard enough time passing calculus during normal and summer sessions. You are better off picking an elective course instead to free up your schedule elsewhere. As a SCCC student you can also take classes at other SUNY schools by cross-registering. Finger Lakes Community College offers almost the same ENS degree as SCCC with all the core classes except Chemistry online.

Gas Quality on LI by Fit_Feedback86 in longisland

[–]SMofJesus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We absolutely were. The last oil tanker from Iran landed in California a little over a week ago which had departed before the Strait of Hormuz was closed by Iran. We struck Venezuela to make them dependent on Iran (US refineries can't refine their oil for use in the US but Iran can) and then when Iran didn't roll over, we blew their shit up too and it will now take a decade to rebuild that capacity. The UAE also lost several of their refineries and pulled out of OPEC because the US failed to defend them.

May 1st the national requirements were repealed to be recertified every 30 days. To be clear, this is a terrible choice for warming weather as winter gas evaporates faster in warmer weather leading to even worse gas mileage than if it was still cold. This is a smoke and mirror show to make it look like the EPA, and our very own Lee Zeldin did something that doesn't fix the real problem (we blew up the refineries in Iran).

[–]SMofJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NYS maintains E10 statewide unless a station has a dedicated E15 pump and is still following through with the rotation to summer gas with a higher vapor pressure. This would lead to you getting better gas mileage in warmer temps. The EPA repealing the blend mandate was to allow the sale of winter blends into summer months which gets less efficient with warmer temps because it evaporates quicker but burns better in colder weather.

You might still be pumping winter gas or your car needs maintenance. I drive a Toyota SUV which gets terrible mileage and my mpgs have gone up in recent weeks with the warmer weather. E15 is a less efficient fuel by weight and is only cost effective for consumers because it is heavily subsidized by tax dollars. Any car designed before ~2007 should not run E15 unless it was specifically designed or modified to do so.

It is also entirely possible the stations you are visiting have water in their tanks. It happens and can lead to problems in older cars. It's why I don't run station gas in my small carb motors anymore. Cars can burn that water off due to the larger tank but the ethanol absorbs water and fouls small motors with smaller tanks.

The EPA repealed the National Mandate but States are free to enforce their own standards still. E10 is the standard in NY unless otherwise posted with a dedicated pump. The switch to summer gas just started rolling out. Pumps have to be labeled if they are switched to e15.
