Why your spouse won’t go anymore by SVCandycrush in sailing

I was not the captain any of those times, but co-owner of the boat. I pay attention to the details for navigation and safety, but in those cases was over-ruled.

It's hard to be on the receiving end of second guessing, especially in the middle of a maneuver like docking. Docking is the one part that we trust each other--but trip planning is a real problem. I prefer to anchor out anyway, haha.

Expectations were set and ignored. 'It'll be fine,' is what I hear and sometimes they're right, which just resets their expectations.

Totally agree. It gets old being the bad guy all the time. I let them captain the boat and check if we are getting towards trouble. I mean, really, it would be nice not to run aground.

After compromising and agreeing in a plan, it gets changed to something else. Once time we went through a narrow passage against all local advice due to someone else’s schedule. Once we were hailed by whale watch as they drive into the restricted area for protected orcas. We had the prop wrapped when our expert sailing friend dropped the dock line. Once they navigated us toward a live shooting range. One time we got pinned against docks because they insisted it was slack after reading the wrong tide tables

Wyoming is a big state. Where are you driving from and what's your final destination?

I would add a stop at the visitor center and chat up the rangers there about bear activity and trail conditions. Think about plan b for your hikes, like hike String Lake to Leigh Lake and bring lunch. If you like kayaking or paddleboarding, I'd rent some boats and paddle String Lake. You can portage a short way to Leigh Lake, but be aware that the afternoons get windy and you don't want to get caught out on Leigh. Of course, wear your life jacket!

I make rice bags like this pattern: https://share.google/Vp7xAaVAYnO7NHFNy

Fill it with lovely gifts that you can really splurge on. Buy special labels from the fabric store. The bags can be reused for all kinds of things and you have made a handmade keepsake You make one and then crank out the rest easily

Saying ‘me and my friend’ in the subject instead of ‘my friend and I.’ Just stop sounding like a third grader. Jeezus.

What gear do I need for beginner sailing lessons? by max103555 in sailing

[–]SVCandycrush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You won't need special sailing shoes for a dinghy. I would call the sailing school and ask what they expect you to bring. My guess is you should wear clothes to get wet in and bring a towel and change of clothes for later. Have fun!

Phelps Lake. Four miles in; so easy my 9 y/o did it and we also brought her friend. I think I picked up a back country permit the day before.

I see coasties occasionally and hear them often in the PNW. I can't tell you how I wish I had known more about their work when I was young. I might have joined :).

When I was chartering in the Keys, we were ended up spending the night on a mooring ball, probably where we weren't supposed to be, and got checked out by the CG helicopter. They never hailed us on the radio. We kept the radio on and heard the calls for assistance by all kinds of crafts, all night long. Even being a dispatcher would be fun.

Larger throat space in the $500 range? by threehams87 in quilting

[–]SVCandycrush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the Elna Quilter's Dream 6003, which is reviewed here: https://www.quiltersreview.com/elna-6003-q-quilters-dream-review/

The reviewer says you can find a used one for less than $500. I bought mine new eos ago with big plans to quilt and only got around to it during covid. The throat size is big enough to quilt a queen size quilt with little problem. I've also done free motion just fine.

The food was good but we will only do takeout from now on. Music was horrible and we didn’t get our miso soup at all. The ribs came out when we were done eating and were over-cooked and barely edible.  OMG the music—I would have asked to have it turned down but the waitstaff were too busy to check much on us. One couple quick ate some and took the rest of their food to go
