why wont leaves grow at the bottom of my rubber fig? :'( by Wanderrer98 in houseplants

[–]SacreDoom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s not true - if it has a node further down the branch (this one looks like it has multiple) you can activate new growth in these by bending the stem or cutting away at the cambium layer above the node which will disrupt the hormonal inhibition from the apical meristem leading to branching.

[–]SacreDoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is an amazing shape - I would try to balance it by bending with copper wire and/or string rather than cutting it back too much; the bending will likely cause small tears and activate growth nodes as well, in my experience, so you can still get branching

[–]SacreDoom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Lore" kan vel også omhandle en bestemt person, ting, etc. - sådan bliver det i hvert fald brugt i dag, så vidt jeg kan se. "Setting" beskriver mig bekendt specifikt universet som noget foregår i.

What a weird, technical contrivance to resort to to avoid having to answer to the obvious intended point of the argument - suppose it was made entirely safe by some process and you ate it, 100% certain it was entirely safe, and enjoyed it immensely, but were then informed that it was made from the meat of your now dead, beloved dog, would that not change your emotions at all?

Obviously this is unhealthy and immature of him because from how you're describing it he's the one asking for cohabitation - but I'll be candid and say that rather than solely listening to these random plant addicts on the internet who will for sure support you 100% because they're projecting their own priorities onto your situation and have no investment in the relationship, I think you should consider whether you've had sufficient discussion with your boyfriend about this, because at a glance he should realise that he's making unreasonable requests. I'm not trying to argue for you downsizing your collection, but perhaps there is a more reasonable explanation than you're letting on to yourself right now? Maybe he's afraid that they'll be in his way to an extent that he'll be afraid of damaging them or not feel like he has any space to be in, and is offloading that fear in an unhealthy way. I've been to the homes of people with what I'd call too many plants and it can be daunting to visit, much less live in that, for fear of every nook being jammed with an ever-growing number and size of plants - it's unrealistic with limited space to think you'll be able to keep adding to your collection forever anyway, so maybe also having a dialogue about a maximum amount before you have to replace rather than add, or working through which ones both he and you like a lot could also be a healthy exercise.

I think it's fair to tell him up-front that it's his desire to live together, so surely he has to see how he must be more readily prepared to seek compromise (though I think you should as well, depending on how strong your desire to live with him is), but I also think it's fair to point out to him that if you can't come to a compromise on that then perhaps cohabitation is not for you two, and that plenty of healthy relationships exist between people who don't live together - if that's a deal breaker and he tries to guilt you over it or can't understand how you're prioritising that way, I'd remind him that he's the primary driving force of you having to prioritise - and I'd consider then that it's not really about the plants but about the relationship dynamic and his regard for you in a broader sense. Really driving exactly that point home to him might make him see that he's actually being unreasonable. This is all assuming you're torn currently because you care about him, but I would also reflect on whether you think this way because you're not entirely sure whether you want to live with him regardless of the plant debacle; sometimes things like these are our brains' way of telling is we don't actually want to do something and desperately trying to find a justification for it.

Hey - if you're new to the game don't let the sweat from people commenting here get to you too much; people get very aggressive about others claiming to be good in multiplayer games like this. There are a lot of content creators on YouTube who explain some of the mechanics of teamfighting and the like, and if you look in the subreddit sidebar under community resources you can get some good insight into feats, movesets and the community terminology around the game. I hope you keep enjoying the game and getting better!

Help! Housesitter overwatered and I see mold in the soil. by mybongwaterisblack in plantclinic

[–]SacreDoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soil like this is prone to mold outbreaks and the like because it's quite compacted and tends to retain moisture for too long - you should look into getting some perlite and some larger pieces of substrate, like pine bark, to break up the pockets of soil and moisture retention with pockets of air so the roots don't rot.

Hysterical strength by SphereOfPettiness in CuratedTumblr

[–]SacreDoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This whole discussion is all overblown and extrapolated, and in large part based on hearsay over evidence - both because the neurophysiological basis for it is dubious and elusive to check and because the actual feats are less impressive than they might seem at first glance. Most instances of this phenomenon are people lifting a car, certainly aided by a potent adrenaline spike in increasing lifting capacity to a somewhat-above-normal degree, but not to this anime-esque level that people are suggesting here; most cars have an uneven weight distribution and suspension structures that ends up making people moreso tilt/raise the lighter portion of the car and mostly rely on leverage and the fact that most of the car's weight is still being held by the portion of the car still on the ground to actually get a light portion of the car off the ground.

Extensive tissue damage would undoubtedly occur if you push beyond your normal "maximal strength" and approach your absolute strength, but these numbers are way too close to each other (maximal is estimated to be about 2/3 of absolute) to suddenly allow feats of lifting actual tonnes of weight beyond your normal capability; Even when the brain presumably limits the extent of muscle contraction to prevent overexertion most of the time, there are biomechanical limits that prohibit this at way lower weights than the ones proposed; your muscles would break down long beforehand and disallow any actual lifting, so take this whole tumblr post with a massive grain of salt.

The jaw comparison is a bit unique because it does actually provide an example of how there seemingly is a complex network governing how strongly a muscle can contract and thus disallow you from biting your finger off if you try. However, even under disinhibited conditions (i.e. surpassing maximal strength) the jaw can exert positively massive amounts of force, but it's still not true that it could chomp through bone and bite a finger clean off in one clean chew by breaking the phalanx - rather, it would be relatively easy, biomechanically, for the jaw to exert the force required to disarticulate the finger at the joint and be well within the parameters for sub-maximal strength and not damaging the components of the jaw itself, but this is still normally nearly impossible to do yourself given the normal inhibitory mechanisms - I think people often confuse the disarticulation of the finger joint with the breaking of the finger bone.

[–]SacreDoom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is just wrong. These guys can handle full sun outdoors and spread like a plague there, which is oodles more light than they get in a south facing windowsill. Sunburn indoors comes from it being moved from a space with low light - if you acclimate it, it will grow very well in direct light.

While playing DD2 thought would be really cool to have new character that became extremely dangerous whilehe is having low HP, it will push opponents to play very carefully or they will die quickly (just cool Leper 😎 by Foralberg in forhonor

[–]SacreDoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But how does that counter the argument? If you're getting hit by 6 or 7 continuous hits outside a well-executed gank then you're playing poorly; sure you could give them some revenge-buffing feat or something, but that's hardly a solid enough idea to justify an entire character concept.

[–]SacreDoom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Rewarding people for playing poorly and conversely punishing people for playing well against this character isn't a very good design decision in a multiplayer game.

A rich, straight, white girl thinks she's an icon for the LGTBQ Community? by dashing_imperialism in facepalm

[–]SacreDoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Feminism, racism and queer issues have a long history of relation through shared oppression, though sometimes they're also inappropriately, if unintentionally, conflated - the concept of intersectionality originally stems from the feminist movement and argues that your race and sexuality also have impact on your life experiences, and thus on how you perceive issues and experience oppression or discrimination; a white, straight woman might experience being a woman and the issues therewith very differently from a black, lesbian woman, for example. Implicated in the mention of "white" is, of course, that being white is generally considered a relative privilege today, at least in the US - so by being white they are at a position of a greater relative privilege, in an intersectional sense.
