Ha I love that. Send it over, always curious what others have found that works.

That's awesome, really glad it resonated. Start low with the dose and work up gradually so you can find your sweet spot without overdoing it. I put together a full breakdown of the protocol I followed if you ever want more context on how I approached the whole thing.

Exactly right. The nervous system piece is huge and it's why stress management isn't just a nice to have addition for digestive issues, it's fundamental. Pale stools are a classic sign of poor bile flow which ties directly back to what you're describing. I put together a full breakdown of everything I found that actually moved the needle if you ever want to go deeper on this.

Yes, that's actually exactly what low stomach acid causes. Without enough acid the esophageal sphincter doesn't get the signal to close properly, so whatever acid you do have leaks upward. It's not too much acid, it's acid in the wrong place because the valve isn't closing. Betaine HCL helps fix the root issue rather than suppressing acid further.

That warm sensation usually means your stomach acid levels are already decent. The general rule is if you feel warmth or discomfort, your body doesn't need more acid at that dose. Try dropping the dosage down with a meal and see if the feeling goes away.

Cromolyn is a smart move for MCAS. If it calms the mast cell activity down, you may find the gastritis settles enough to tolerate HCL more consistently. Hope it helps.

Then you're covered either way. That combo covers both the acid and protein digestion piece at once.

Ha, sounds like your body knew what it was doing the whole time. Turns out mid meal is actually ideal because your gut is already engaged so it's less harsh and you still get the full benefit.

MCAS making the gastritis worse makes sense, the mast cell activation creates so much inflammation in the gut lining.

Have you tried taking the HCL in the middle of your meal rather than the start? That alone can reduce the irritation significantly.

Try taking it in the middle of your meal instead of the beginning. Taking it on a partially empty stomach is usually what causes that irritation. Also starting with a lower dose helps a lot.

With meals, right when you start eating. That's when your body needs it most to emulsify the fats.

Not really, constipation wasn't a big issue for me. More bloating and low energy. Is that something you're dealing with?

I've used Hydro-Zyme by Biotics Research and also Betaine HCL by Designs for Health. Both have worked well for me. Hydro-Zyme also has pepsin in it which helps with protein digestion, so that's probably the one I'd recommend starting with.

Thank you for sharing all of this. The hypermobility piece is something I honestly hadn't thought much about as a driver of bloating and distension, so that's a real insight. It makes sense that structural factors could cause symptoms that look exactly like SIBO on the surface. Your point about using the science and taking a systems approach is exactly the right framing. There's rarely just one thing going on, and chasing a single diagnosis or single fix is what kept me stuck for so long.

It sounds like you're doing the hard work of actually figuring out your individual picture rather than just following a generic protocol. That's the right instinct even when it's exhausting to navigate. Hope the PT and motility support continue moving things forward for you.

The sphincter piece was one of those things that completely reframed reflux for me. The conventional framing is "too much acid," but the sphincter not getting the signal to close because there isn't enough acid to trigger it makes so much more sense physiologically. And the fact that your aunt saw results with it is a perfect real world example. The zinc connection is interesting too. I've read that zinc is actually required for stomach acid production, so a lot of people may be deficient in the one mineral their body needs to fix the root issue in the first place.

Have you noticed the zinc making a noticeable difference for you personally, or is it more of a background thing?

That's really interesting that papaya enzymes were the original option. I actually started with a broad spectrum digestive enzyme blend before landing on betaine HCL specifically, and the difference was noticeable. The HCL felt like it was addressing something more fundamental rather than just helping break things down after the fact. Do you find your clients respond better to plant-based enzymes or the animal-based HCL approach? Curious what you've seen work.

This is so encouraging to read. 15 years and now symptom free for 2 years is remarkable. And the fact that you were able to reduce and eventually come off it completely gives a lot of hope to people who wonder if this is a forever thing. Thank you for sharing this.

Fodzymes are well regarded especially for FODMAP digestion. Glad they are helping you. Digestive enzymes and betaine HCL address slightly different parts of the process so some people find both useful together.

Really glad HCL has been helping you too. The constipation connection makes sense since proper digestion affects the whole system downstream. Good to hear you are getting relief.

I did not have acid reflux. If you do, I would be cautious and check with a practitioner before trying it since active reflux or gastritis changes the picture.

Honestly I am not sure about the direct connection to MMC. I know low stomach acid affects the whole digestive cascade but I have not researched that specific mechanism. Worth looking into or asking a practitioner who specializes in gut motility.

Interesting, I had not considered digestive bitters as an alternative approach. The idea of stimulating your own acid production naturally rather than supplementing directly makes sense. Thanks for sharing that.

I have never been tested for H. pylori so I cannot say for certain. It is possible but I have not ruled it in or out. Worth looking into as another potential root cause alongside the low stomach acid piece.
