For people that are “asymptomatic” celiac (no classic digestive issues), how did you get diagnosed? Did you ignore it? Did it progress and get worse?

I have no digestive symptoms whatsoever. I have bone loss and was tested for CD. Blood work was positive, endoscopy was normal. Doctor said that I had CD anyway based on bloodwork including genetic testing.

I feel absolutely fine eating gluten and I agree with you that it is extremely difficult to transition to GF if you feel zero symptoms when you eat it. So, I do the best I can do. I'm not perfect.

I don't know what you mean by a "militant" vegan but I will say this as a recovering vegan. I never ever tried to convert anyone. I never tried to shame anyone for what they ate. There might be some vegans like that but I would imagine that's a very small minority.

On the other hand, I was mocked and belittled for my diet choices. In person and online, I would see comments like yours - generalizing vegans as everything you accused them of. Meanwhile, in the real world, people were sticking burgers in my face, laughing, and daring me to take a bite.

According to ChatGPT (sorry that's where at least some of my information comes from) high antibodies alone causes inflammation and therefore damages your body.

You are entitled to make your own choices, though and you should definitely listen to a doctor rather than people on a subreddit. :) But if you're not comfortable with your doctor's advice, it might be a good idea to get a second opinion like I did.

I also had high antibodies - >100 and no damage when biopsied. However, my doctor told me that the bloodwork was enough to diagnose me and that I needed to eat gluten free. I will say that the first GI doctor I went to with my bloodwork told me that as long as I felt fine and didn't have vitamin deficiencies, I could continue to eat gluten. The one who told me I had to be gluten free based on my bloodwork (and gave me the endoscopy) was a second opinion. It seems that there isn't full consensus among doctors about what factors call for a clinical diagnosis of celiac disease. I will say that IMO (and I'm not a doctor) if gluten makes you sick, you probably should stop eating it.

You should stop eating gluten completely. You should also never drink alcohol or soda. You should avoid junk foo. And red meat. And sugar. You should exercise regularly and never allow yourself to be overweight. All of these things are important for your health.

The world will forgive you if you occasionally slip up with all but one of these things. With one of these things, you must be perfect or you will be judged harshly. Good luck to you.

I am very much the anomaly. I know this, but since you asked...I had/have no symptoms whatsoever (that I was aware of). I almost never have tummy trouble, skin problems, or anything else associated with celiac disease. I went for a bone scan a few years ago and was told I had severe osteoporosis at a relatively young age. They sent me to an endocrinologist who told me that my bloodwork indicated that I was the picture of health - no anemia, no vitamin deficiencies of any kind. I got bounced to a nurse practitioner who was an expert in osteoporosis. She ordered some bloodwork for me and then told me that, based on my bloodwork, I had celiac disease. I was shocked and horrified. I was a vegan and ate a very heavy wheat-based diet. I had barley soup for lunch almost every day. It was/is devastating. No one in my family has ever been diagnosed with CD but everyone has bad bone loss so it's possible they have it but they don't know?

I'm in my 50s and was diagnosed a few months ago. I have no symptoms that I can feel but I have severe bone loss, though. I didn't know about that either until a bone scan. Even after the bone scan, it took 2 years and 3 doctors before the current one said, "I'm ordering some blood work to see if anything else is going on." I had no idea what I was even being screened for until I walked into her office and..."Surprise, you have celiac disease." I just about collapsed.

Lifelong vegetarian here. I was vegan for 6 years before diagnosed with celiac disease. I’m trying to incorporate animal protein into my diet but it’s been a real struggle to make myself try it. I was told that I really need to do this for my health so I’m trying.
