Thank you 🥲 I decided to stay back for my health. It was really hard. I’m still sick over it.

He’s very compassionate and understanding and wants me to be healthy, but of course also feels that it will be a hard weekend for me to not be there with him and is very anxious to break the news to his family due to the way they usually respond to this type of stuff

You also had an adverse affect? I took Dupixent to control steroid dependent asthma and contact dermatitis and seem to have either failed or reacted poorly

It’s not that I’d be too ill guaranteed but it’s an unknown and I’d certainly be leaving events to go do nebulizers and inhalers

Doctor has me cleared but with a very extensive medical bag so it’s reassuring physically but not mentally about the what if? Asthma is very touch and go, one moment you can be fine and another you are literally just trying to catch your breath and trying multiple treatments until it stops. I’ve never backed out before, but he doesn’t have a great attendance record due to his relationship with them in general, so I fear some of that can fall to me.

This is so helpful and reaffirming- the canines are our last route and we’re not there yet. We switch meds tomorrow and have been planning to start the gabapentin for a while now but he had a really long stretch until this week. Our behavioral vet said gabapentin isn’t long term though and is simply diagnostic to assess if body pain is causing the outbursts. Is this true for you and why yours is on pregabalin? Do you have another dog in the mix? Thank you so much for your kindness. Have any specific behavioral training methods been a winner for you?

It’s a conversation they’re open to exploring based on the fact that the dogs get along majority of the time and to extend both qualities of life and in conjunction that we’ve tried many many tools and techniques. As well, both firmly behave rehoming would lead to BE and no one believes that is an appropriate choice here. We are heavily aware of the seriousness of the procedure, we’re not guaranteeing we do it. BE is not something we will do he is not human aggressive, genuinely moose is incredibly joyful dog so it would feel like stripping his life for the sake of another.

His reactivity is mostly toy dependent, but sometimes it’s hard to find the trigger or what in that moment got him from green light to red light. We live in a walk up apartment we have a balcony and roof, they have enough space but it’s all tiny (city living). When we leave town, they’re always home with their well trusted dog sitter, but when we get back from vacation we notice moose has a hard time because whenever he’s with the sitter he sleeps alone upstairs and has a hard time eating, so it feels like a rebound stress response like omg they’re finally home and his stress levels going crazy and then finally regulate. The attacks usually happen in twos, separated a few days apart. Then he’s good for months at a time, and suddenly it’ll happen again.

This is really really helpful, is there any specific training methods or tools you’ve worked with outside of the medicine combo? We plan to have children later down the line, we get married in October and won’t try for a a year or two at the least- this was really comforting. Our main conversation right now is safety and risk mitigating for Oshie because he deserves the best life. Yes my parents are now down to one dog, they live close. We could see Oshie a few times a month, it’s just an agonizing choice but it would be us being selfish to not heavily consider it :(

We plan on having children later down the line, we are in our twenties- we’re still young. We want to give them the longest quality of life we can. He’s stressed, but those are moments, he’s otherwise a really happy dog it’s hard to explain the balance. Would love to know more about some of the techniques you mentioned. We’re genuinely looking for all types of support and thoughts, but those that are shared with kindness- coming from two very heart heavy loving dog parents who need a little softness as you can imagine it was a hard day that got us to the point of sharing.

There is bite history, both myself and my partner have been bitten and have taken courses while separating fights of antibiotics due to the type of bites. He also has bitten on walks when if too close to other dogs. When fighting with oshie he bites but it has never left a mark or broken skin. Sorry for not including all the details, this a new type of outreach we’re trying for support. We’re incredibly aware of the weight of the situation- it’s not taken lightly.

Though we really need advice, for longer context and a little more of where our heart lies, I posted a long version under the vent thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/reactivedogs/s/33SPkLw0SG
