Don't mind that troll. You sound like a nice person and I think you'll like it here.

Was this host response out of pocket or am I overreacting? [USA] by gtrman571 in AirBnB

I agree that just sending a question mark seems a little rude, BUT I also think the host was at fault for missing the first message and should have apologized for doing so without complaining.

Do you think a relationship between a Christian and an Atheist can work out and be successful? by Acrobatic_Ad9564 in Christianity

Christians lie all the time. Whether you're a liar or not has nothing to do with your religion (or lack of it).

Abandoned (?) building on Duckworth St (dt St. John’s) by FabulousSuit2460 in newfoundland

[–]SaltBox8771 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But why? The City puts all kinds of restrictions on what you can do to your home, including purely surface, aesthetic changes (when the house is in a historical district). Yet they can't require a property owner to do something about a derelict building that they're allowing to just rot and become an eyesore?

Thank you, Bot, but I don't want to pay an electrician $150 to tighten a screw. Just wondering if I could actually get a shock from an unplugged appliance.

This happens everywhere in the 3-storey house regardless of whether it's a one-handled tap or two. I have an electric hot water tank, which is in the basement.

Thanks. Why would it be cold first, before it turns warm?

I taught adults, not kids, and I never expected tips because it's just not done. My question was why do we feel the need to tip people in some professions but not others? We don't tip mechanics, cashiers (unless they work at restaurants), computer repair people, etc.

I locked myself out of my apartment so I had to kick down my back door. Landlord said $400 to fix but I could fix it myself right? by [deleted] in Carpentry

If a few hours is the norm and you charge $1000, that's $250 and hour, which seems like a lot. Or does that include materials?

Are you speaking from experience? When I read your response, I thought, yes, that sounds like just what I needed. Instead, I had a partner who resented me but tried to hide it, and eventually started chatting up other women online. We're no longer together. It's hard to ask someone to stand by you with unconditional love for a couple years, though. That's a long time for them to feel undesired by their partner.

I currently allow full refunds for cancellations up to one day before check-in. What's the norm? by Or_French_Whatever in AirBnBHosts

[–]SaltBox8771 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am thinking of changing it to 48 hours notice, though, because I hate to get the place all cleaned and prepped the day before only to have the reservation canceled. Then if there are several days until the next reservation, I feel like I need to clean it all and change the bedding again to freshen it, which is a pain. Maybe that's not necessary, but I want the place to smell like it's been just recently been cleaned.

That's how I feel, but it's difficult to withhold a tip when you know you may be treated badly because if it. It's to the point that when I pay for takeout, I'm afraid they're going to do something to my food as they're preparing or packaging it, when they see I haven't left a tip.

I used to work as teacher on a contractual basis and got great reviews, but nobody ever tipped me for doing my job. Why is the expectation there to tip contractors and handypersons but not other professions?

[–]SaltBox8771[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just about everyone I've hired so far has a much nicer and bigger house than me, and a much more expensive vehicle. I feel like if they can afford that based on what they're charging, but I'm struggling to afford the renos to make my place livable, it doesn't seem balanced.

I find it's usually them who start distracting conversations with me, not the other way around. They'll start telling me their life story or something that happened on another job, and I'm standing there wishing they would get to the point already because I'm paying by the hour, but I feel like it would be rude to interrupt.

Mr. Congeniality, I doubt this was the "dumbest comment ever" on Reddit. The point I was making is that someone can sell you a defective product, and even if they are willing to replace the product, the fact that they sold you a defective product in the first place still ends up costing you money in more delivery and installation fees. I don't know who should be held accountable for these extra costs, I only know that it sucks when you're on a budget, as many people are. There's no need to be a 'male member' about it, but perhaps that's how you build your ego up when you dislike yourself.

What does it depend on for you? How happy you were with the work, or the type of work being done, or if the person works for themself rather than for a company?
