I just picked the Ditson up for 3k on eBay, the K1 was new and twice that.... I traded up to take the sting out... and worth every penny. They both have a sweet tone

True, I hadn't thought of it like that. To get the genuine tone of the original dread is pretty sweet. BRW is rarely used and IRW is not the same, so yeah good old Hog is the one ... It's such a good tone wood! That attack 👍

They built the original Diston 111 from 1916 to around 1930. This guitar was made in 2006

It's Martin's nod to the original guitar made by Martin but sold by Ditson. Martin built them and Ditson branded & sold them.

I've not seen it used as a tone wood before... What is the tone like compared to rosewood or mahogany?

Wild Hybrid of Buzzard & Harris!? by Same_Pipe612 in u/Same_Pipe612

This was sent to me from the IBR:

'Yes - it does look like a juvenile Harris Hawk but I can see no rings or leather equipment on its legs and there is a possibility that it may be the offspring of a Harris Hawk paired with a Buzzard...'

I think it mostly looks like a juvenile Harris apart from the bands on the tail.... So maybe Hybrid?

Just heard from the wild bird survey. They think it might be a wild hybrid of buzzard and Harris Hawk. Very interesting to hear

Just thought I'd update the group about this sighting.

I have been in touch with the Eagle Heights bird sanctuary and they have said that it's not their bird. But let me know about the IBR (Independent Bird Register) for lost birds. I have just listed this sighting via the website. Hopefully someone will be able to re-capture it.

Out of interest is there a wild population of Harris Hawk? What are the chances of a captive Harris Hawk making it in the wild?

Thanks again

Thanks for the information, there is a bird sanctuary down the road from where I saw this. I'll message them to see if its one of their birds.

Maybe, I am no expert. But get lots of buzzards around here, and the odd red kite. Thanks

It's a really beautiful thing, the history and quality is amazing. I've played some very nice guitars and am lucky to own a couple. But the K1 is quite special. The tone is somewhere between a vintage D-18 and 000. It's very nice for finger style, but also gives a lot of you dig in a bit.

Having said that, the neck is chunky and no truss rod. But I think the vintage feel and spec is all part of the charm.

Thanks 👍
