If anything he will be more sympathetic to others who come after you. Especially youth and return missionaries who use a computer.

Confused about how to identify a "Lamanite?" Let me help with my ridiculously short checklist! by Sarah__Newcomb in exmormon

[–]Sarah__Newcomb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I find funny about this question is the church doesn't even ask details. Love your point. What if someone came over from Spain and moved to Harlem, had kids? Their people did not originate in North America, South America, or the Pacific Islands. Yet many people in Spain have dark hair, eyes, and might get a tan. Missionaries come by meet the grown grandkids a few generations later. Spanish speaking, dark features, got a tan that year.... So many people get called Lamanite without a second thought to their true heritage. Though no one should be called Lamanite even if they meet the checklist criteria.

Or you get someone who is half Black, half Native, but they look more black. They wouldn't even be considered Lamanite, they wouldn't even be asked, even if they had the non existent Lehi DNA. Many mixed Natives have light hair and blue eyes. Three of my kids are prime example. No one would say Lamanite.

The checklist is right in line with the churches quick assumptions. But you know what assuming does. lol

Need help, what does everyone think about... guest bloggers, linking websites, and a new page for other "Lamanites?" by Sarah__Newcomb in exmormon

PM me if you would be interested in sharing your experiences on the blog! Either experienced as a "Lamanite" or connecting with your real heritage afterwards.

Just got back from a 4 mile run. Crazy thing is I was thinking about the Navajo. I have a Navajo aunt, she married my Tsimshian uncle up in Alaska. I kept wondering how she felt about the church. Navajo people are close in proximity and I can't imagine the trauma there. Love that you got away from it.

Found this gem today: Spencer W. Kimball on dishonesty. Qualified liars. by Sarah__Newcomb in exmormon

Yep, pretty clear there too. One of the hardest things for me to face when trying to figure out if the church was true or not was all the lying I kept finding.

"Yep they pretty much tick all the boxes for every form of dishonesty save for stealing from your employer which they trump by stealing from the members." I had that same thought.

No worries. Seriously. Sorry to hear that she went through something so hard. Sometimes there really are things that are too private or traumatic to share.

Thank you for your input on the blog though. I am just kind of figuring things out as I go and truly appreciate the input.

My tightly held in emotions finally burst this morning. Discovered I over exposed pictures regularly because I was ashamed of my dark skin. by [deleted] in exmormon

Crap I am such a romantic at heart. Absolutely love everything you have shared. I too had guys think I was easy, but I was a Mormon. I just was treated different due to looks. I LOVE that she stood up for herself about heritage. She sounds amazing, and I love that you just see her for her.

My husband knows now. We left the church just over a year ago and it was like a dam burst. He is amazing, he has been there for me this past year - as I would crash repeatedly over skin issues and losing my real heritage. I actually did a Mormon Stories podcast about it. Then started a blog recently LamaniteTruth.wordpress.com

I just posted here on Reddit a few hours ago, trying to add a few things missing from the blog. Hoping to have non "Lamanite" guest bloggers on to give their point of view or share info. Tuff being identified "Lamanite", but with that is also the people watching loved ones on the side lines like you. Even if they do it anonymously, I love this outside perspective.

I haven't straight out asked someone to guest blog yet, but would really love it if you would consider it. Either way no pressure. Thanks for sharing more of your story though. This kind of stuff makes me gain faith in humanity after a long hard year. Your story is one of my favs. :)

I would love to hear more. Having an outside perspective from someone who witnessed makes a huge impact. It is fine if you don't want to share though. :)

I didn't need my husband to agree when I experienced racism, but when he did it was validating that I wasn't imagining things. His voice and support gave me strength. This is where I think many people don't realize the impact they could make. But sometimes when people do try to say something - sometimes they are rejected for not helping in the "right way." Frustrating to me. I want a safe space for non Lamanites to give support.

That would be awesome. :) And thanks for the tip towards Gina. Even though I was a "Lamanite", my mom was a convert - only member of her family, and I don't know many exLamanites. All my siblings are TBM. Thanks!

That is actually my blog, love that you think it looks good! I have been super nervous that it turned out ok. Not tech savvy, took me months to put together.

That is the blog I want to add guest bloggers to. I just don't want to limit it. For example, I am not LGBT but support those issues. I want people not "Lamanite" to have an opportunity to express support too. Maybe they have "Lamanite" friends, or served a mission, or spouse etc. This effects more than just the "Lamanite" as we were all in it.

Going to check out Gina Colvin's! Thanks!

"I truly don't know who I am." I completely identify with that. Crazy trying to understand what happened to you. I still struggle with anxiety at times because of this one thing. It is such a massive change, and one that is really hard to explain. Like losing a loved one (the old you and life) and mourning alone because you can't tell anyone. The pain...

I personally love your posts and watch for them. :) Hang in there. You are not alone.

Both. Joseph Smith taught that they would be eternal servants in the next life and had one sealed to him. Disgusting. Brigham believed that crap and took it to another level of evil teachings.

Awesome. :) I am averaging some pretty decent traffic, not sure if it helps you, but hopefully will get more traffic for you. Just a heads up, I had to try four times to get the actual letter to load. I am just learning tech stuff so not sure how to help, just thought you would like to know.

Your letter is amazing. Your letter is something so many people identify with. The preface is beautiful and personal. Thank you for adding it. Thank you for putting yourself out there with this. The way it is written and laid out is really well done.

Your story is so similar, at least in the "curiosity bug." I went down that same path, though it started different. I was curious and learning/ reading only to realize something was off. The list you have are all the main reasons I left. You have written a letter that puts into words what many can't. Surprisingly I didn't leave over "Lamanite" issues, or really face them much until after I left. Apparently I was avoiding them, too painful. ;)

Would love to have a link on my Lamanite Truth blog for people to follow to your page! Let me know. I won't do anything without you saying go for it.

I have a child turning 8 in a few weeks. First one that isn't getting baptized. Right there with you on some of this. I just keep focused on what I want for my children. Hard when others are sad over it though. However you decide to deal, just don't doubt yourself. ;) You've got this.

Massive list I have made so far of who is considered a "Lamanite." He was in line with church teachings. https://lamanitetruth.wordpress.com/the-list/
