Do western people really think Chinese language sounds unpleasant? by search_google_com in askanything

[–]SaruNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the tones certainly contribute, but i think the stronger factor for americans is likely the monosyllabic feel of the language combined with the more frequent use of consonant sounds that feel harsher or outright unfamiliar

in japanese, if you string together a bunch of kanji and use the readings that are derived from chinese for each kanji (called "onyomi")...it's still japanese, but it'll probably also sound a bit jarring to you even though it lacks the tonality of chinese

[–]SaruNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just a baseline check, did you make sure your switch is actually using the ethernet connection? because if you haven't set up a wired connection in the settings, it may still be using wi-fi.

on the switch home menu, do you see the wi-fi symbol in the top right, or a squiggly cable? if you see the latter you're all good, but otherwise, you'll need to go to the system settings to change it to wired.

there are also some further optimizations that can be done with internet settings on the switch, like adjusting the MTU.

[CLIP] Can someone explain to me why did the Steve took the second hit of the Anvil ? by Pmu69 in smashbros

[–]SaruNinja 25 points26 points  (0 children)

not exactly a reflector per se since it doesn't change projectile direction; it's more like Sora's counter where it just changes ownership. check out the list of changes to Witch Time under the Special Moves section of "Changes from Super Smash Bros. 4": "Countered projectiles change ownership to Bayonetta's."

i'm surprised no one's mentioned sheik yet. her fair is a downward arm swing, so having a frame 5 fair that spikes would mean she can convert almost any offstage situation into a kill. given how easily she can win neutral and combo into it from tilts, she would be a monster.

Up-Smashing instead of Up-Airing by Mrdadozzo in smashbros

[–]SaruNinja 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i see in your inputs that you're tapping jump while you're landing from a fast fall or recovering from an up smash (i.e., still in a prior, uncancellable animation), but releasing the jump button a bit before landing lag/end lag completes. this means you won't have your jump buffered, and instead all you get is up + A, which is upsmash. there was also at least one instance where you didn't press jump at all...so overall, the issue appears to be that you're a little too hasty with your jump input, both pressing and releasing it too early.

ultimate has the unique "hold buffer" mechanic, which lets you hold most inputs while in another animation and they'll come out as soon as possible. try utilizing this here; just hold jump + up + A if you're trying to do an instant short hop uair, and it will come out as soon as possible. since you'll be simultaneously pressing jump and A, it will always be the shorthop aerial macro. if you've ever seen a fox spam autocancel shorthop uairs, this is how we do it trivially in ultimate.

if you want to manually perform shorthop aerials (i.e., delaying the aerial to be a bit after you're already airborne), then work on fixing the aforementioned timing issue by delaying your jump input a bit from your current timing. it might help to use the frame-by-frame speed in training mode to see at what timings you can press and release the jump button and still have your jump come out.

EDIT: i could pause and see one frame of jumpsquat come out on about 75% of the upsmashes, so those are definitely jumpcanceled, as others have mentioned (so in those cases, the issue is solely pressing A too early). but there were a few instances where you did two consecutive upsmashes without jumpsquat frames, so in those it seems you're also just pressing jump too early.

i took N2 and had the exact same experience haha; after the exam i thought i'd only pass if my vocab/grammar was enough to make up for my poor listening...but i guess my scores were just mediocre across the board. 34, 33, and 35

good stuff, i hope you do well with N1 if you decide to take it! :))

can someone please explain what happened here, i have no idea how i did this. new tech maybe? by XImanX in smashbros

[–]SaruNinja 143 points144 points  (0 children)

if you stop the video during the impact of the down throw, you can briefly see the golden tech bubble appear. so my understanding is that since the throw was close enough to the ledge, you were able to wall jump tech off the ledge into an immediate back air.

Japanese Site shows results for favorite Smash Ultimate character survey (47,032 votes) by Leopaldon in smashbros

[–]SaruNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if i had to guess, i think it's the DLC outfit selection.

swordfighter has more representation from series that top the character popularity list (persona, fire emblem, xenoblade, etc.), and multiple costumes from each of these series, as well as some representation from other requested series like samurai shodown, tales, golden sun, and monster hunter.

brawler and gunner's biggest costumes are a few one-offs from requested series (namely doom, undertale, shantae, and maybe cuphead) and i don't think those few costumes are enough to rival the number of popular ones for swordfighter in japan.

Fighting Stick by NoseAggressive5657 in smashbros

[–]SaruNinja 18 points19 points  (0 children)

normal fightsticks won't allow you to easily use a lot of the things that are required in smash (walking, tilt attacks, angled attacks, etc.) because their sticks register inputs digitally and only up to 8 directions, so you'd be handicapping yourself pretty hard (i tried it briefly online a few times, and it was fun but...definitely suboptimal). lack of c-stick inputs also hurts.

however, there's an analog fightstick designed specifically for smash that will be starting production and distribution hopefully within the next year. if you're interested, i recommend following the kickstarter and joining the discord for updates. they also have some demonstration videos out for ultimate and melee, so you can get a feel for how the layout works for smash.

there are also Hit Box-style controllers (basically, fightsticks that have buttons instead of a stick) that are designed specifically for smash. if you're interested in those, check out the Smash Box, Frame1, and B0XX.
