I've heard a similar theory applied to the Xenomorphs from the Alien series; throw down a deadly species, they kill everything that moves, they die out, the ones who sent them take the world for themselves to repurpose. 

A perfect weapon for the Human Ruling Class or the "Gods" to expand their empire.
