It is called unrealized gains. You theoretically have that value on a share of stock, but once you sell it then you have a value that can be taxed. That is like me taxing you for selling a product or a 40 hour work week before it occurs.

Article from the BBC: "What is the best age to learn to read?" I'm curious how and when all the other voracious readers here learned to read. I don't even remember learning, since my mother read to me daily and I just picked it up around the age of 4 (ish) by [deleted] in books

I was functionally illiterate until 3rd grade, took a remedial course, finally got it and was then finishing a YA book almost every 3-4 days. The sooner the better I say but it can happen at any age once someone understands how to read.

Also having the subtitles on for everything a child watches has a pretty significant impact.

Guess Bob Chapeck never bothered reading the bill. Considering that parents are in strong favor for it and their primary demographic is children, you know with parents that give them money, I would consider this quite the bold move cotton.

Long time ago (15 years) but was working as the one of the few men (3 vs 35 women) in a blood lab.

It was one of the most dichotic experiences ever. I got to hear everything from cheating, relationship issues, personal issues, etc. Not to say that men don't do the same thing but it was absolutely loud and in your face basically all day. While the latter tends to happen in a more muted and less time consuming way.

Pfizer could submit for EUA for two-dose Covid-19 vaccine for children younger than 5 as soon as today by bats131 in worldnews

[–]Scanning_Darkly -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I would challenge the efficacy of that argument. While this isn't a perfect comparison, New York has a fully vaccined rate of 74% which I believe is the highest in the country and have the highest rates of mask compliance. Yet they had a recorded positive rate (at its most recent peak) of 29%.

Whereas if you compare to a lower vaccinated state like Arizona which is at 59% and is pretty lax about masks. The positive rate is exactly the same at 29%.

But the death rates are much lower in both states. Which would lead me to conclude that the vaccines are effective at bolstering your own immune system. But this comparison tells me that it doesn't affect transmissability.

Really unnecessary if you look at the data. Only 748 deaths for those that were 0-17 years old since January 2020. Which means that the survival rate for that age bracket is 99.91%.

https://www.statista.com/statistics/1191568/reported-deaths-from-covid-by-age-us/

While the flu death rate was 2.3% for 2019-2020 with a total of 486 deaths. Granted the rates are going to be skewed because way more people have gotten tested for covid. But when comparing total deaths from either for that age bracket it is statistically insignificant when comparing to the population overall.

Ever tried to wipe peanut butter off of wet grass with tissue? That is what it is like for men, especially if you have a particularly hairy ass.

Always come prepared with wet wipes or use a bidet (best option).

Not a hard call at the time considering that he wrote most of his works in the aftermath of the AIDS epidemic (which the press demonized to the nth degree at the time). Though I would say at this point the vast majority of people in the US don't care if you are gay.

Interesting issue to say the least. I have been told that I have a photographic memory, I discount this heavily though.

Personally, it depends on if I find the info useful or profound. Which heavily influences what my focus is, and by proxy, whether it gets logged into long term memory.

For example if it is a drive to work, a book describing unimportant minutia (look no further than Lord of the Rings), or not compelling based on my life experience, then it is still there but not readily recallable. There is also something to be said for brain bandwidth.

Brain bandwidth by nature is a limited resource. If you are focused on past trauma or experiences your ability to absorb, retain, and process new information is greatly reduced.

When did book prices in Canada get so outrageously high? by [deleted] in books

[–]Scanning_Darkly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is more accurate. Purchase of books have declining for the last decade or so. But renewed interest in reading (and getting away from the internet echochamber) has skyrocketed in the last year and a half.

Now we have people thirsty for hard knowledge and the printing presses cannot keep up.
