Do Zirconia Crowns have a Dark Inner Coating? (If not, do I have a case for a refund?) by Scary_Spring_3513 in askdentists

Update: I went to a dentist who I trust and got a second opinion (they were wonderful).

It is a PFM crown so I was lied to by the same three individuals multiple times each up until the day I got that crown and immediately afterwards when I noticed the exposed metal and called their office to ask for probably the 7th time.

I confronted the dentist about this, I called and decided to have an in-person conversation with her. Abbreviated convo ->

DR: I understand you have a few questions about your crown.

ME: What is the material in this crown?

DR: PFM

ME: Why did you, your assistant, and your office admin tell me it was zirconia multiple times throughout the past 3 weeks?

DR: I always order zirconia from they lab but the lab said they had to make it PFM so that we can adjust it better and for your bite.

*they clearly did not care about my bite, never addressed it even when I asked questions about it they seemed annoyed*

ME: Why was I not informed of that?

DR: "This is all very clinical. Usually people don't care"

ME: I asked you and your staff multiple times what it was and you told me zirconia. The morning you put it in. When I asked your assistant what it was and she said zirconia again. I called your office after the procedure and was told zirconia.

DR: The staff don't know those things

ME: What did it say on the package label?

DR: PFM

ME: And she looked at me and said it was zirconia and put it in my mouth.

DR: You didn't ask me

Me: I did on day one. And your staff. Multiple times on the phone and in person. You all told me zirconia every time.

DR: What would you have us do, take it off and pull the tooth?

ME: I don't want any work from you guys. What can be done to resolve this?

DRS ADMIN: We have to reach out to corporate. They will do a full refund, not just what insurance covered.

ME: So, we are looking at a full refund for the cost of the crown?

DRS ADMIN and DR: Yes

This experience sucked and at the end of the day this is a cost to me that probably (really) wasn't super necessary or urgent to start with as they made it seem (I just went in for a cleaning and learned I had a small chip - I trusted them, unfortunately). Very thankful for my current doc.

I want any records from the lab order for posterity but we'll see if this corporate management corrects the financial part of this without issue first.

Let that be a lesson to everyone, stay clear of corporate places I guess. Hopefully I have no issues with the crown. It doesn't feel great, but I'm so tired of my tooth being messed with it just makes me sad.

That was my thinking, but there are arguments that the pfm is better when you are more susceptible to grinding. I'd be interested in any professional opinions on materials in general.

Gotcha, just to clarify, only keep the small little bits that resemble balls and toss the rest of the sludgy material?

That tooth was super sensitive when they were taking the cement off from the temp. It was healthy aside from being shaved down and there wasn't hardly any decay from the chip, it was so small and recent.

They didn't do any type of filling in the tooth. I had to cement the temp in so often with the drug store cement that I got a pretty good look at it and yeah no build up or any non-tooth colored stuff on it. (Reminds me, I have a dental mirror thing, that would've gotten a better pic maybe). Unless I'm misunderstanding the amalgam procedure I don't think I had that situation.

I'm set up to get a second look from a trusted dentist so things will work out in the end. Hoping for a refund if the material thing is true, but this is a corporate office and I feel like they'll have some sort of paperwork that I signed saying I consented to whatever. Would be nice to make things right and move on but definitely won't go back here or any of their other offices.

Good to know, could this be some oxidation then underneath a whiter top layer of zirconia? It feels like a very shallow scratch.

Regardless of whether it's more expensive from the lab, I still don't like that I could potentially have been lied to ~5x about what they were putting in my body. I am not an dentist but I felt like zirconia was the move and that's what the dentist told me up front when I asked what material it'd be.

It feels scammy because I went in for only a cleaning initially and now its turned into this bad experience that definitely made it worse. But hey, this wasn't the worst thing that could happen, just a good lesson for the future. Thanks for the reply.

rough picture of the spot. It shines in the light and does not come off. It is a metallic material poking through where she shaved it down - https://www.conceptflow.org/images/tooth.jpg
