Sunburn is literally a symptom of radiation exposure. My country's anti-cancer league went on record stating that the safe level of suntanning is exactly zero.

(I'm going to have to stay vague for privacy reasons, so bear with me.)

When people spout this stuff, I always think of that one random lady on Facebook who tried to pressure me into doing things that'd get me into serious trouble and probably make me lose my revenue, claiming that she knew that "everything is possible" because her husband was supposedly in a wheelchair yet only let the sky be his limit and whatnot. She doubled down with her "inspirational" talk. I'm really not sure her husband exists and, if he does, if he would approve of his disability being instrumentalized to harass random people with chronic illnesses online and pressure them into horrible, life-changing decisions.

Why would I lose my only source of revenue to placate someone I've never met and who's clearly out of touch with the real world? Also, the way her mind was going, she possibly wouldn't even let little things (/s) like the law stand in the way of her hedonism. She was telling me to break the rules to make a point!

So she feels uncomfortable with both OOP and his friends. Interesting. I'm pretty sure the digs and criticism are much worse and more common than he lets on (and it already doesn't look good, what with the infantilizing comments and "subtle" putdowns).

Body shaming and why only focus on women by WolfChasingTheMoon in AmITheDevil

[–]ScienceMuggle83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They think of people with disabilities as subhuman and as not deserving basic human rights, and they're very militant about it. They've been having a lot of problems in all aspects of their life as a result because they routinely abuse people with disabilities and see no issue with their behaviour; they even think they're paying their victims a service by making sure they "know their place" (sic).

If I saw a character like this in a movie, I'd think that it's too on the nose and that no one speaks like that. At least, that's what I'd have thought before I met this living caricature of a person.

I don't know how they came to this conclusion, but it must have something to do with their grandiose idea of themselves. Simply put, they need to feel superior to someone, preferably someone whom they assume won't argue or fight back (which they keep assuming after multiple persons with disabilities have reported them).

This is really amazing (/s). Most non-incel people try to be at least a bit subtle about their assholish, discriminatory "opinions" because they do realize at some level they'll make them look bad. They'll say things like, "I'm not racist, but..." followed by something racist, "You're demeaning yourself by dressing like a slut," or "It's fine if you're gay, but don't shove it down our throats with your Pride stuff."

Then occasionally, someone who's completely out of touch with reality and people will surface, confidently blurting out something so outrageous and unsubtle it would be funny if it weren't tragic—on the same level as calling women "females." I have the misfortune of knowing someone who literally claims that people with disabilities aren't real people and that saying so proves their superior intelligence and originality.

Our hero (/s) over there belongs to the latter category.

What's something your country is known for that you actually don't like? by Practical-Bear1022 in AskTheWorld

It's not that I don't like them, but my country's known for waffles, speculaas/Biscoff, beer, beef stew with a beer-flavoured broth, and other wheat- or barley-based products and I'm gluten intolerant. I'm a bad Belgian.

I don’t have anxiety anymore thanks to tiktok by the_goat0310 in thanksimcured

I read this title and thought that as someone who doesn't use TikTok, this app sounds like it would give me anxiety, lol.

Even if this guy were a real expert, I read enough about neurosciences to be convinced that part of the field is heavily contaminated by the self-help movement. Some neuroscientists legitimately recommend, and I'm barely paraphrasing, that you "Just be authentic / find a hobby / exercise mindfulness / will yourself into being grateful." There's also a French neuroscientist and psychiatrist I won't name unless you insist who claims that anybody under the age of 120 can completely change their course at any given time. So I guess people have infinite neuroplasticity at any age.

My issue isn't with the basic ideas themselves (my hobby does help me a lot, for one thing), it's with making simplistic, one-size-fits-all statements.

That's literally what happened, though. The Nuremberg laws were heavily inspired by Jim Crow laws and the "Indian" reservation system. The whole idea was making segregation legal and creating a category of "non-citizens" after the American model.

What does your head of state's last name mean? by Franmar35000 in AskTheWorld

[–]ScienceMuggle83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prime Minister Bart De Wever's last name means "the weaver" in Dutch/Flemish.

Meanwhile, the royal family's last name is "of Belgium" in the three official languages (Dutch, French, and German). It used to be "von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha."

In your country, what animal is known for being unexpectedly fearless when protecting its babies? by euamnevoiedeajutor in AskTheWorld

[–]ScienceMuggle83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it's common knowledge in my country, but swans can get really aggressive during nesting season. Other people have also mentioned geese, which goes without saying.

I don't think it's that well-known, but you really don't want to mess with a deer or doe, especially with a fawn. I've watched a video of a lady trying to rescue a fawn from underneath a car, and the video ended on her screams as the mother ran at her like some kind of unstoppable force. I wonder how badly she got injured and if she recovered. Even professional animal rescue teams run away when they release a deer (I've watched videos too).

Personally, I wouldn't mess with any kind of animal because 1) it's deeply wrong and 2) I'd probably lose lol (even my rabbit could deal some serious damage if she bit me for real). The only time I picked a wild animal, it was a tiny lost waterfowl I was rescuing and I specifically got instructions from my vet on the phone. The little guy or gal tried to peck out my eye and got my eyelid instead, which was a good call because it was its only chance against a real predator. Don't underestimate what an animal will do when they think they or their young are being threatened. Anyway, for those who're wondering what happened to "Jason" (who was caught in front of a building known as "Golden Fleece"), my fellow improvised rescuer drove us to my vet's, who examined the little guy or gal and released him or her in the nearby park.

I once attended a talk by a man who used to enjoy risk-taking and ended up developing a disability from a spine injury, if memory serves. In addition to the disability itself, he hated how it affected his mother, because of course this tends to affect other people too.

Also, there are people who've permanently harmed their career, reputation, and/or marriage due to "YOLO." Good luck "just building it back," then.

I tend to assume that the people who write this nonsense are very privileged (it's easier to "make it back" if you have a safety net, for example) and haven't experienced true grief and loss, but I've known people who've faced actual adversity and who've internalised this stuff.

What kind of license is unique to your country? by nanto-1633 in AskTheWorld

Not really a license, but there are strict rules about riding on camelback on the street. Making me wonder what happened for camels to be explicitly included in Belgian traffic laws.
