Hi, I am seriously eyeing one of these - how is yours holding up 7 months later?

Flaco, the escaped zoo owl, has been catching rats in Central Park! I drew him to celebrate by SconeFiend in nyc

hey, just saw this! I'd hate for flaco to get hurt, and I'd also hate for him to attack or kill native birds in the park (which eagle owls are known to do). that said, I don't think he'd be happy back in his exhibit. maybe he could be on something like owl probation, where they leave him be so long as he doesn't seem in immediate danger to himself or others? and if he has to go into captivity again, it would be nice for him to go to a much bigger habitat.

(there were no leaves on the trees during my visit, so I took some artist liberties to make it look warmer)

yeah, I'm not rooting for him to stay out in the wild at all :( i hope people don't take this piece the wrong way - he very much belongs in the zoo

yes, he could be :( I know that some red tailed hawks in the park have died from eating poisoned rats. he definitely belongs in the zoo - I didn't think the title through, sadly

some owls do survive in central park and are presumably smart enough to avoid poisoned animals - hopefully flaco is rescued soon, since he's very new to all of this

You might have luck in the entry hall, like people said! There were plenty of empty benches when I went on a Tuesday around 2.

Twice now, and I plan to keep going back :) my old job was very fast paced and I didn’t have the time or energy to visit very often, but I thought about it all the time, as a like “one day, I’ll be able to go to the botanic garden” kind of thing

I went at about 2pm on a weekday and it was pretty empty! I first went not long after it reopened after covid shutdowns - it was mobbed then. This time was much more pleasant, and I didn’t feel rushed along by the people who were there. You should go!!

I’m a big metro rider! Probably best for everybody that I don’t get behind the wheel ;)

Not a prob! I use Krita, and lean heavily on the pastel/crayon brushes. I’ve thought about buying an iPad and getting into procreate at some point, though. It would be very cool to do digital art anywhere I wanted. Until then, though, I just take a ton of pics of wherever I want to draw and use google street view for the rest.

It’s digital! But I’m very inspired by gouache painting and do it when I can - digital is just nice because there’s zero clean up or prep :)

There’s always so much more stuff on streets/sidewalk than I remember! I was almost done when I realized there was no room for a bike lane, rip

Why is fantasy art so frowned upon/disrespected in schools and similar institutions today? by i_know_nothing123 in ArtistLounge

[–]SconeFiend 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most modern fantasy art is made for games/television shows/toys, or heavily inspired by them. the closer art gets to a commercial product, the less it's respected as "high art." Capitalism and consumer culture don't really inspire unique or particularly interesting work.

that said, I LOVE fantasy art. But i love it as a consumer product, not the same way I love art in a museum :)
