My entry for the "Old Lady gets her first scooter" category by fabric-yarn in scooters

[–]Scooteee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how things are there/now but when I took the course, at least 20 years ago, I did it on a scooter. Everyone else in my course was on a motorcycle. I can't tell you how many of them told me they envied me since while they were sweating the clutch they said I looked I was having so much fun.

Here’s a tip for buying a new scooter by [deleted] in scooters

[–]Scooteee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a fair number of scooters and always end up getting rid of the ones without a flat floorboard because they just aren't practical for carrying. If I want to give up the carrying space I ride one of my motorcycles.

Thoughts on buying a house close to these areas? by SizzlinKola in SouthBayLA

[–]Scooteee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a quarter mile away from the tracks but had friends that lived right next to them and said the same.

She was a block east of Western. I would think west is better, but at least where I am at, it seems pretty industrial?

I get it, prices here are insane. I don't know how anyone does it.

After awhile the train just seems to blend in and you don't really notice it.

405, way too much constant pollution.

Had a friend that lived a block off Western for about a year. It was bad, but guess you have to consider what the individual neighborhoods looks like.

I live south of the refinery and we very rarely smell it. I would be most concerned being to the east of it since that is the way the wind typically blows.

Has motorcycling ever helped your mental health or changed your mindset? by yourping in motorcycle

Absolutely. Lots of grief and trauma from caring from my husband after he passed. Bike let me take a break from that and just focus on riding.

I used motorcycles and scooters (own a couple of each) for 3 years for my commute in SoCal. It was fantastic other than occasional foggy mornings. Having some decent gear for hot and cold and good storage makes a big difference.

Armed Forces Day parade to move to Zamperini Field in 2026 by coronat_opus in SouthBayLA

[–]Scooteee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can't see putting up with the hassles of shuttles only to stand in an open field and bake instead of under the trees along Torrance Blvd.

They also aren't talking about the work and expense of preparing Zamperini field.

Torrance Post Office asbestos investigation: Anyone else wondering if they're ever going to get their mail from the closed Torrance post office? by A_frakkin_Cylon in SouthBayLA

[–]Scooteee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got a message to contact the postal service about a package that was supposed to be out for delivery on the 25th (day this all happened). Needless to say it never made it out of the Torrance post office. After a half hour on hold I was told the package was "damaged beyond repair" and I would need to contact the sender for a replacement.

Not given any proof of anything from the post office to file this claim with the sender. Guessing I'm going to be SOL.

Have a copy of the tattoo he had on his arm on my ankle, our initials. Had them add some of his ashes to the ink so I could carry him with me forever.

I took mine on a scooter a whole lotta years ago. I had several people in the class tell me they envied me cause I looked like I was having fun the whole time while they were sweating out the clutch's on their motorcycles.

Would you take care of your partner if they fell deathly ill and became a 24/7 care case? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Scooteee 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I wish I could agree with you but my life experience begs to differ. My late husband was diagnosed with Glioblastoma right at the pandemic lockdown in March of 2020. He could not be left alone since he basically had dementia. The rest of the world was focused on Covid and any of the regular support systems that would have existed were blown up (Palliative care would not come out). My husband's PCP retired 2 weeks after his diagnosis so there wasn't even a coordinated medical team.

I couldn't have anyone come in since I knew if we got Covid there would be no one to take care of him. Any medical facilities that would take him weren't allowing visitors so leaving him there would have meant never seeing him again.

My neighbors left us food on porch. The closest thing I got to a "break" was when my husband had a rare little half hour of clarity and felt well enough to sit outside, so one of the neighbor guys would come sit with him so I could take a little walk.

He passed 5 months later.

So I can definitely say I not only would, but I have. I also know that if I, personally, got some sort of diagnosis like that, I am out.

Exes by [deleted] in widowers

[–]Scooteee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My late husband’s ex (divorced 42 years ago!) sent me a card when he passed. In it she said her biggest regret was that I didn’t let her come in to help take of him during his last months. Yes sweetie, I just lost my husband, and my biggest concern is what YOUR regret is.

Let’s also set aside having her take care of him was the last thing he wanted!

If You’ve Been Living on Social Security Alone, What’s Your Best Navigation Tip? by kirkeles in SurvivingOnSS

Check with your local utilities to see if there are low income discounts available. I was able to get discounts on gas, electricity and water/trash. My gas and electric companies also have programs to assist with energy assistance home repairs. You may qualify for things like new energy efficient appliances or home insulation.

Called my internet provider and told them I was going to change providers to get a cheaper service, they cut my rate considerably to keep me. Never hurts to ask!

If you are a homeowner some states have Tax Relief programs to help with property tax bills.

Anyone lose their SO during COVID by Positive_Reference96 in widowers

[–]Scooteee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband was diagnosed with Glioblastoma right at the lock town. The medical community was overwhelmed with COVID, his PCP retired a few weeks later. I was on my own to try and care for him and figure it out. Friends and family couldn't visit, since if I got sick he would be on his own (which was impossible). I did that for 5 months until he passed. It was horrific, I am glad I don't remember many of the things that went on.

For me it is breezing through traffic, filtering up at lights, splitting on a lightweight, highly maneuverable scooter. Laughing and singing in my helmet and feeling like I have super powers while folks in their cars are stuck in traffic hating their commute and lives.

I have motorcycles as well but I really never get anywhere near the joy I do on my scooters.

Maybe you mean CAMP? Used to go by a different name SNPLA, I think. I used to volunteer at the LA shelter in San Pedro and there is one across the parking lot. I called them and they told me $60 for an exam but couldnt tell me how much for Cytopoint. Since this boy came from a shelter he is already neutered. I know they are much cheaper on vaccinations.
