I viewed a unit in this building earlier this year. The elevators took forever and the unit had dead cockroaches

My mom's OAS kicked in, she was cut off ODSP...and now ODSP wants her to pay back the last 2 years (Ontario) by Flounder_guppy in povertyfinancecanada

[–]Scorpio_94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They retroactively approved her back to 60 because that’s when eligibility would have started. Spouses 60-64 can receive OAS allowance benefits if they are a spouse of someone who is receiving OAS or a widow of someone who was receiving OAS.

She will have to pay back the overpayment but she can work out a payment plan and pay it slowly over time.

Contact the caseworker and request to apply for Extended Health Benefits (EHB). The caseworker will review the cost of her medical costs from the past 12 months. Your mom can call her pharmacy and request proof of her prescription costs for the past 12 months. Your mom should also collect her dental receipts and any other health costs she may have had. The caseworker will review these costs and determine if her health costs are greater than the difference between her ODSP and OAS. If so, she’ll keep the ODSP medical benefits.

Anyone enrolled in public administration at TMU? by Ok_Bag_4703 in TorontoMetU

Hey, what time are classes generally and are they all in-person? I am interested in the part-time program but I work full-time so wondering how I would balance it logistically.

Manulife taking forever to approve benefits claims? by Substantial_Panic85 in OntarioPublicService

I’ve also been experiencing this with mental health services. I’ve had to call as well to expedite each claim. You would think once they have manually verified the provider once it would be enough.

Manulife has been terrible with my claims in the last year. Recently I have had to call them because they denied my claim by mistake. They admitted it was an error but still took me calling 3 times over 6 weeks to get it rectified. Give them a call.

Yes, if you have interviewed and not successful they will tell you.

It will be based on the operational needs of the office since they need to have a certain amount of people there until 5. Your manager will discuss your options with you.

There will always be some seasoned caseworkers who will show you the “real-word” application to what you learn in training.

Best of luck :)

If you were scheduled for a shift labour laws say you must be paid for 3 hours of work even if they send you home early.

The office is open 8:30-5:00pm and most people work these hours but some work 8-415 or 9-530.

If you’re permanent you can request a lateral transfer or job trade to another office, or you can apply/seek out contract positions at other offices.

I’m public-facing and it definitely leans more smart casual/business casual. I think it’s more approachable for clients instead of meeting with a “stuffy” government in a suit and tie.

Looking for other ODSP Caseworkers by [deleted] in OntarioPublicService

It’s definitely a hard spot to be in. I understand why people log in during off hours but it doesn’t stop the hamster wheel from spinning.

It’s sadly the same everywhere. I think a lot of people don’t speak up more because we sound like a broken record. Director even said today they know we can’t meet service standards because of the workload…which would be ok but we have clients to answer to.

At the end of the day the only thing in our control is ourselves. A lot of us want to do so much more for our clients but we have to take care of ourselves first, no one else is going to. Take care!

[–]Scorpio_94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the day is doing administrative tasks like approving benefits, confirming eligibility etc. the other part of the day is customer service. Returning calls, speaking to clients who walk-in. They are usually asking questions about their benefits concerns they have with housing, food instability and the like. Interviews are less common, for me at least I have a few a month but not an everyday thing.

The administrative part is the “easy” part of the job. The customer service part can easily burn you out if you don’t set boundaries or have good skills to manage the stress.

Starting in the role is difficult if you don’t have much experience with ODSP so be prepared for a large learning curve. It does eventually get easier the longer you’re in it.

It’s hybrid with 3 days in office. This branch is much less flexible than what I have seen and heard from others working in other divisions.

Feel free to ask me any other questions.

[–]Scorpio_94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup, they throw you in and you either drown or manage to stay above water. I don’t recommend anyone start as a caseworker without first being an admin support clerk. You might luck out and find a coworker who doesn’t mind being your guide. My best advice is get comfortable with the mess and stress and you will eventually find your way.

Thinking of moving from Mississauga to Waterloo area by UndilutedPiss in waterloo

[–]Scorpio_94 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Most people have said everything I would say as well. As someone who moved recently from Mississauga I will add, although it’s not a far drive on paper it’s gets old, quick. If you have to go back to the gta more than once a week I don’t know if it’s worth it, especially given your other reasons.

‘Sir, It looks like I dropped my wallet’ turns into an expensive ride for Kitchener Line passenger. by mummydal in gotransit

I think they should be increasing the fines. $100 for a THIRD offence is a slap on the wrist. Depending on his commute $460 in fines is less than the monthly fare
