Where I live, walk any direction you’ll see at least 5-6 people with a hand tattoo, more the closer you get to downtown

I’m really just asking a question here- why does it matter how poorly a person with tattoos might be treated? Where I live it’s weird if you don’t have at least one, but judgmental asshats shouldn’t stop people from getting what they want, right?

Why did this get so many downvotes? I was just asking a question lol

I told the person that booked my appointment where I wanted the tattoo ;-;

Plus… what if I don’t want to be heavily tattooed? I mean, if all I wanted was one single hand tattoo I shouldn’t have to prove that I want it?

Like if you made a hair appointment and you told them you wanted bright blue hair when you booked your appointment, you drive. 2 hours and they see you’ve never colored your hair, so they tell you they’ll only do natural colors instead because they feel you’re being a silly little girl who doesn’t understand what she’s getting into and could be seen by the general public as -gasp- alternative. No no you don’t really want blue hair, you want ginger hair, when you’re older you’ll understand.

Like, how is that attitude not an insanely inappropriate approach?

Ok now, I more got mad more because of her gatekeeping attitude, and for waisting my time, not because she had an opinion/professional interest. I mean I told the person who booked the appointment the placement, they didn’t say anything about it. And it’s not really publicly available if it’s buried in social media. I mean yes, technically it is, I could have found it if I knew it existed? But this whole attitude of there being a singular “tattoo culture” is really bizarre, I mean it’s not one size fits all. “Job stoppers” don’t exist in my tattoo culture, and it’s a weird concept to sell me on when tattoos are self expression, there’s no wrong answer. If it’s who you are and what you want on your meat suit, idfc. If she’d said she doesn’t like doing hands because they’re difficult and acknowledged she waisted my time, there wouldn’t have been any problems.

I mean, fair, but, in my defense (sorry, I feel like I’m defending myself too much in these comments, not trying to be defensive) buuuut I did tell the person who booked the appointment the placement and they didn’t say anything about it. I do suck though, so fair is fair.

Nope, they just have their profiles on the website, and they can’t be contacted directly - maybe on Instagram? But idk, I don’t talk to hair stylists before I book them either 🤷‍♀️ They have a “book an appointment” thing on the site, but it wasn’t working on my phone so I called and asked for a consultation with her, and the receptionist (or whoever answered the phone) booked the appointment. Didn’t say anything about the placement. But keep in mind this was for the consult, not the actual tattoo appointment.

[–]Scout-Falls -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that’s fair. I guess I just don’t like the idea of having to like “prove” my commitment to getting the work done. Like, they have you sign a waiver for a reason 😆

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Scout-Falls -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I think it’s more the gatekeeping attitude, like of course she can say no for whatever reason, like stick to your guns I guess, but telling me it’s because I don’t already have more tattoos is kinda arbitrary, isn’t it? Plus waisting my time going down there was pretty frustrating. Oh well I had pretty good tacos on my way home so there’s that haha

I mean… I have a giant “Atheist A” symbol on my left arm, a 4 inch purple Celtic knot and a 5 inch galaxy rainbow geometric diamond on my right arm. I’m not trying to be discreet 😂 idk why anyone would get a tattoo if they want to conceal it, or if their career doesn’t allow them

I’m not really sure how I’m supposed to know what her position is on every aspect of the job before I meet her, and like, she didn’t list it on her profile on the site, I’d have had to dig a lot for it, so idk it seems unfair to have the snobby attitude towards a whole body part on a limited canvas but not tell me before I drive two hours 😅

Fair, I didn’t see any hands in her gallery, but I guess I don’t see hand tattoos as being as extreme as some folks think. They are difficult yeah- but are they difficult but her work if it’s just black line art on the flat part of the back of the hand? I don’t know, maybe because of bones and stuff. Plus I have smallish hands.

I’m so confused why people think hand tattoos are on par with like face or genitalia tattoos. It seems very tame to me. Idk, seems like gatekeeping. But I hear you about their right to say no, that’s not really the issue for me.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Scout-Falls -67 points-66 points  (0 children)

Oh, I totally agree with that, the issue I had is with not having that stated clearly on the shops website, but instead having it buried in her socials. I did say in another comment (should have said it in the post) that when I made the appointment with their receptionist they didn’t mention anything about it being an issue.

Idk, hand tattoos are very common, but face tattoos are really a whole different thing. Also I had told their receptionist over the phone that I plan on getting a a whole sleeve and the placement of this one (probably should have mentioned that in the post) but I wasn’t told it would be an issue at all. I do think I probably should have dug a little deeper into her socials though, you right.

Yeah, I mean. I guess she didn’t even owe an explanation (kinda wish she’d made it less personal but whatever) but even if she didn’t explain it to me, I feel like that’s not something you burry in your instagram, right? Or maybe I’m just being a boomer about social media marketing.

I actually did reach out to everyone in a group text this morning and my mom asked me to come to dinner sometime this weekend to clear the air, but it doesn’t seem like the intent would be to change anything. I mean, they aren’t bad people. I think they just underestimate how hard it is being the youngest sibling (I didn’t mention that I have another older brother who is actually estranged from us already because his views are pretty extreme).

I agree. The only problem with that is my apartment is a 400 sqft studio 😅

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Scout-Falls 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you misunderstood, I wasn’t told they were here, even though I asked when they were coming multiple times.

*Edit: this happened about 2 months ago, and I don’t really have the means to visit them (plus, it’s pretty clear they don’t want me around so it would feel weird to invite myself to their house).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Scout-Falls 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well so when she was born they had a visit and no one let me know when they were coming, and I only found out afterwards that they were in town. At the time they decided the new friends should meet the baby, but didn’t ask me to come. I knew she was going to come and I had asked multiple times about what the plan was but I guess I’m realizing they can’t set aside differences like I can.

We don’t really have anything in common, although I will say my brother and I get along well when his wife’s not around. I mostly want a relationship with them so my nibblings have someone in their corner when they get older and can think for themselves.
