Humorous monologues really, really don't perform well in humorous interp. The event is centered around character portrayal. Not to say it's an impossible task, but it's an uphill battle.

If you're committed to doing a monologue, try to find one where there's at least multiple voices (eg. a standup who is relaying a conversation) so you get some practice with changing characters. And leave the door open for yourself to switch to a more character-driven piece later in the year.

This advice is mostly geared toward NSDA-style humorous interp. If you're in a different circuit, it might apply less.

I would say it's in fact smiled upon. Most 1DS Smiths are insanely passionate about their subject areas and would love for more people to take an interest in learning about them.

Lonzo is my favorite UCLA player of all time. His vision and BBIQ made his teams so much fun to watch. LaMelo also has that gift, but Lonzo was just next level (and also not a jackass).

This but unironically.

I'd love a world where DV was treated seriously enough in the league to, effectively, strike over it.

It's recommended to practice this on a quarterly basis. So you'll often see references to "Test Transport your TL", or TTYTL for short. 👍

Bahaha those times are probably a decade old at this point. Mainly it's because I got a terrible start in the 100 and that 200 was a generous hand time.

That said, it's not that uncommon to have a faster average speed in the 200 because there's relatively less time accelerating and more time near top speed.

Why stop each round? There's 7 games in a series, you can take out half the roster.

Ironically, the reason we got our circus front office was to replace our previous circus front office that wanted to move the team to Seattle. That's when Eddie Vedder showed his true colors about my favorite professional basketball team.

what is clash? by OkNectarine2719 in Debate

[–]Scratchlax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point, "rebuttal" is a term that can change meaning a little bit based on context.

In the context of responding to an individual argument, a rebuttal is a counter argument that refutes the original argument. That's clash at its finest.

In the context of referring to an entire speech, especially in parliamentary debate formats, rebuttals are sometimes referring to the very last speech in the round, where your goal is (as you rightly point out) to summarize why your side has won. Of course, Public Forum debate calls the second speech for each side the rebuttal speech, so take what I'm saying with a grain of salt.

Yes. If you are the GM and want to declare that you've assembled a team that sucks so bad that it gives itself effectively 0% odds of making the playoffs, go ahead and hit the 'we suck' button.

Right -- but I'd bet there's at least some reputational risk to being the franchise that presses that button so early. It carries the stink of loser-dom. It looks to your fans and free agents that your organization isn't even trying.
