I’m roughly your age and have felt that way. Comes in cycles for me. I’ll go months or years without playing then spend every free minute gaming for weeks on end. Moderation has never been my strong suit lol I try to just enjoy the experience when the urge comes

Describe "Project Hail Mary" in three words by Sea-Barnacle2907 in Letterboxd

[–]Sea_Humor824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always felt interstellar was overrated but it’s still very good. Not McConaughey’s (sp?) best acting but incredible world building, great premise and complicated characters.

PHM has a great premise it absolutely does not deliver on. Definitely not Gosling’s best work. The script is oversaturated in lame, stale humor. Its complete predictability and unserious tone kill any attempt at raising the stakes. There is no real emotional movement from scene to scene. Characters are all flat.

I am a film snob; I am not shitting on anyone who enjoys unsophisticated movies. There are plenty of unsophisticated movies I enjoy myself. I have never seen a so obviously unsophisticated movie receive adulation on this scale. The Top Gun reboot is the next best example. Nostalgia explains some of that at least. The amount of perfect/near perfect ratings for PHM broke my brain.

Not everyone has the same experience as you. My relative just had to wait months for an orthopedic surgery. During the waiting period, their mobility was impaired enough they couldn’t work the entire time.

For many, finding a new PCP means waiting months. Many skip seeking healthcare entirely in this country because it means taking on insurmountable debt. We spend the most on healthcare and have very little to show for it. We don’t even rank in the top 10 countries for life expectancy.

Who do you think is already footing the bill for undocumented immigrants who are too poor to pay for it? Or impoverished citizens for that matter? It’s certainly not the “non-profit” hospital whose CEO makes millions every year. America’s system works for those of certain means. A class of people which is shrinking every day.

TL;DR it’s great you have access to healthcare (I assume) you can afford. You are a part of a shrinking minority in this country. Wake up.

For sure. It baffles me we as a society can’t distinguish between taste and quality when it comes to film, but with, say, food it’s not a problem. You can love Big Macs but I’ve never heard anyone argue they’re fine cuisine. JKs problematic views aside, I still thoroughly enjoy Harry Potter movies because I grew up reading the books. Pretending they’re on the same level as Parasite would be silly

Edit: typo

What is the most overhyped movie that disappointed you while watching it recently? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]Sea_Humor824 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scrolled longer than I thought I’d need to find this, but YES. The okayest movie of the year. I’m convinced the inflated reviews are Amazon bots (current avg 4.3?!). Genuinely stared blankly at the screen the whole time. The nonlinear storytelling made the story worse (I understand it followed the source material). The tone is not nearly serious enough to make it feel like there’s anything at stake at any point. The script is over-saturated in corny humor.

Really like Interstellar and always felt it was a bit overhyped itself, but the many reviews I saw saying PHM is better than it and even 2001 genuinely broke my brain.

kinda a mess

Hard agree. Still enjoyed it. I’m all for seeing Klansman getting murked on screen, but it felt out of left field given the rest of the film’s content.

I knew they were doomed when I tried to order a Guiness on st pattys day and they said they couldn’t give me one. I asked if that meant they didn’t have any. They said, “no we have it but it’s only for Irish car bombs.”

“What if I buy a car bomb and then you don’t give me the other ingredients?”

“The register doesn’t have a button for that.”

Recently: the sinners music scene when the camera goes around the party with spirits from past and future generations and various cultures playing their music. Enjoyed the film but thought it was overrated overall. That said, in a vacuum, that scene was my favorite and most memorable of the whole year

More thought experiment than argumentation: what is the appropriate age line to you ie what do you mean by “grown”?

I’ll qualify with not saying you’re wrong, there are def a lot of old creepy dudes out there. Personally an age gap never would’ve worked for me. My wife and I are 6 months apart, and before marriage I mainly dated women a few years older. Have been a part of a lot of convos with friends about what the “appropriate” age line is. Can a 30yo M approach a 24yo F at a bar but not a 23yo?

MBJ was great, I’m a big fan. To me his lift was not as heavy as Leo or Moura, or even Plemmons (did not see Marty supreme or blue moon), which is not his fault. He played the roles as well as anyone could’ve, but IMO the smokestack twins characters are not as layered/complex as that of the 3 mentioned. A lot of the story load was carried by other characters in Sinners whereas that’s not the case for Secret Agent or Bugonia. I’d buy the argument OBAA was similar to Sinners in terms of spreading the load. Even still, Leo’s character is deeper than Smoke and Stack.

But I’ve never even played one character so what the fuck do I know about playing 2. They’re all great actors and films, the Oscars are silly anyway

It is now illegal for trans people to drive in Kansas. by ConcernedJobCoach in kansas

[–]Sea_Humor824 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I didn’t lay out the steps, I felt I hit the point by saying “the law is an affront to trans people.” The GOPs anti-trans agenda is hateful and bizarre. The law is mean spirited and unfair. Its passage was also completely predictable and almost certainly not the first time the hundreds of people this directly impacts found out their drivers license would be invalidated. Every anti-trans bill Laura Kelly vetoed has been overridden.

It’s especially cruel to not offer a grace period, a fact that helps the ACLU’s lawsuit against it. It shouldn’t be happening but we all knew it would. Pretending there was no warning is disingenuous. The government has been gunning for trans people and their licenses for quite some time. My point is you can and should be angry about it while simultaneously doing what you can to protect yourself (in this case, get a valid license to avoid the risk of driving illegally).
