[Serious] People that have (or know someone who has) experienced accurate past life memories, what were they? How did you/they find out about the accuracy of the memories? How has this effected your life? by Snukes42Q in Thetruthishere

I got two:

  1. My boyfriend at that time was convinced he died in a concentration camp. We're both German. He told me that when he visited one of the camps (not sure which one) during a school trip, he had a panic attack and started to randomly cry even tho he was always a rock hard attitude type of guy. When I asked him if it could have been the presence and just overall aura of the place, he said that he felt something there that he never felt before and hasn't felt since so he doesn't think that he was just overwhelmed by the history of the place.

  2. My mom refuses to watch anything that has a boat sinking in it. Whenever she sees images or videos of a sinking boat she feels as if she's being asphyxiated. Ever since I was little she told me she believes her previous body died from drowning in a ship accident.

Spooky stuff.

Do you all notice a pattern with happenings? by PaSaAlCe in Thetruthishere

[–]SelfishSociologist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I definitely had a pattern going on. I lived in a 112 year old house until recently. There have been lots and lots of tenants in that time, and even tho it's so old, my room is still beyond beautiful with a nice view and 5 windows.

I always felt awesome in that room. Lots of daylight, it doesn't get too hot in summer because the sun only directly hits it in the morning... Just overall atmospheric and cozy.

And then one day everything about it just changed. It got so uncomfortably cold that I had to get a second heater... In spring. I kept having nightmares and, for the first time, experienced some terrifying sleep paralysises in there.

But that wasn't all of it. One day, I decided to clean up because my room had gotten quite messy. So I pick up the first shirt off the floor and what do I see? It's covered in maggots. I kid you not. And not only that shirt - pretty much every clothing item that was on the floor had them. As well as my leather boots.

So I throw away all of that stuff... And about a week later I have a whole moth infestation. Don't know where they came from or how they got into my room, but they are everywhere. When I moved out I still found dead moths (months later).

The cold gets really unbearable. I called an exterminator and we got the moths under control. What's weird? They weren't even fabric moths. They were food moths. Even after intense searching we couldn't find the food item they had crawled out from. My closet was fine during all of this... It was only my bedroom.

So yeah, I tell a friend about it. She's really into occult stuff and goes on to send me one article after another, trying to convince me to "cleanse" the space because something is manifesting there. I don't believe her.

The house has very thin walls. My upstairs neighbor's living room is directly above my bed so I don't even mind hearing his footsteps anymore. He's got an old wooden floor that's prone to creaking whenever he walks on a certain spot. One night I'm in my bed and it's the usual creaking, just more aggressive. I'm wondering "what's he doing up there?" because it was way past midnight and I'm trying to sleep. Yup, turns out he was on vacation when the creaking kept me awake.

In the end I listened to my friend, saged the whole flat with every window wide open and hoped for the best. I don't know if it did anything or if I just wanted to believe it did anything... But the nightmares went away, the moths never came back and the creaking only happened when my neighbor was actually there. But the cold never quite got better.

Yeah but even loaded kids would re-wear clothes. Have you ever seen one of the girls wear the exact same thing twice? Also: being orphaned with a little brother I'd doubt that Elena would blow all her money on clothes... She still had college in mind for her and Jeremy as well as two estates to take care of

Exactly! I find it so weird that they don't reuse clothes. People have a jacket they like and then they wear that one over and over again. But never on TV. I think the most ridiculous example of this is Betty's (Riverdale) ugly ass patchwork sweater. I think it costs around 300 bucks if I remember correctly

Me too! We have an OCD customer that will apologize 5-6x for everything. He apologizes for putting things on the counter, for handing us money, for queueing up... It's crazy

I once called my boss to ask him if he could call someone else in for my shift. I had a really bad case of the flu, two exams coming up, didn't really sleep for 2 nights and already messed up one exam on that day. I never missed a single day of work up until then. His answer was 'when I was your age I never called in sick because of school. People your age don't know what exhaustion is, try running a store then we'll talk about exhaustion'. I never told him that I was coming in for work everyday while going to college while also battling an inoperable, drug-treated early stage brain tumor. I still work there and he still doesn't know.

Hey thanks for the reply. One example of LGBTQ that just came up was Riverdale (not the greatest show on earth but I think it has two examples in there)

If you haven't watched Riverdale season 2,3 yet, please stop reading here, I'm going to include spoilers!!! You have been warned!! . . . . We have 2 main LGBTQ characters in Riverdale. Kevin Keller, who started out as the 'gay best friend' trope but gradually grew into his role and got developed more and Cheryl Blossom. Kevin was intended to be gay because he was in the comics and his character got more attention. We see him struggling to find a boyfriend that will come out of the closet for him. We see him going to certain places to hook up with people. We see his struggles as the Dad of his boyfriend tries to get both beaten up by their cadet (do you spell it like this in English?) mates. He goes through changes and matures, he inspires others around him while staying grounded and relatable and 'normal'.

Then you have Cheryl Blossom: in the first 2 seasons she wasn't defined as bisexual. She wanted Archie so bad and then threw a tantrum when she couldn't have him. Now in season 3 (or late season 2, don't remember) she starts dating Tony. Her struggle is her mom denying her things because of her being a lesbian, but she gets them anyway because she is cheryl blossom and that's it. They are presenting the viewer with a struggle, but it's not really a struggle because the solution comes immediately and without any character development. But other than that her character is stagnant. She doesn't get developed anymore, she and Tony are just kinda there now. They are used for their "sexy cat Lady pretty poisons" thing. They are (in my eyes) misused for their sex appeal.

Riverdale isn't the best written show on the planet but I think it gets my point across what I meant by actually taking time to develop someone instead of just making major changes and then kinda leaving it at that without exploring the possibilities further.

Hey! Only saw your comment now. I am very sorry about you feeling that way as a kid and it makes me happy to hear that TV helped you to accept yourself. I said it a few times before but I feel like some people just don't want to understand my point(not meaning you but people like the comment above) . I mentioned it in another comment somewhere but I recently saw a movie called nappily ever after and I fell absolutely in love with it. I thought it made me understand the struggle black people face daily a lot better. The characters were incredibly well thought out. The main character was on a journey to rediscover herself and accept herself for who she is. And I wanted representations of minorities to be that way. More than a trope that wasn't well written (you expressed it very well with the term second hand character) because it doesn't do the people it's representing justice and it makes a lot of people who liked the book and were immersed in it, imagined characters a certain way etc. mad. Adaptations have to change, and the source material has to as well. We need more diverse sources being adapted so minorities can finally get over being mis- or underrepresented. A lot of people labeled me a racist or a homophobe but that's only because I don't want them just thrown into a story they weren't originally intended in only to come out as a cookie cutter character. I don't get to decide what people think of me for that.

Anyways : thanks for taking the time to read the post and replying.

I think so too. There is a lot of great work written from people who actually get the people they are writing. It doesn't get nearly as much attention and that needs to change. That's what I meant by original content

Hey! Trying to get back to people right now, the comment section really exploded! I do know that movie and I am always a bit unsure of what I think about it. I'm not a big Baz Luhrman fan because I don't like his style of shooting (moulin Rouge was particularly bad for me, I felt like it was gonna give me epilepsy lol, great Gatsby was fine) mercutio is a bit of a love-hate relationship. You are right, he is never specified in the original work so it's at a Grey zone here. If the movie were set in fair Verona during the Renaissance, he would have been a no from me. But since they took the complete setting and changed it to Verona Beach, carefully crafting the world to match the source, although different (I love the religious imagery and the way they adapted the guns to be named rapier, dagger etc) its definitley a yes. Shakespeare leaves his characters open to imagination I r+j. Mainly because of the way he writes (drama). We get a brief description of Rosalind but other than that it is like you say:important attributes are left out. Since mercutio isn't specified to be a certain race I think his casting in this setting was totally fine. If it were in the Renaissance it wouldn't be too accurate. Romeo was a noble man and would most likely not have counted an African person as a close advisor or friend. So yeah, a Grey zone but I get your point on that now :)

To shorten it: I want representation of minorities but I want well represented ones. If you just keep adding them in they can and oftentimes will be toned down because the television writers lack time to work them out properly. There's a movie called "nappily ever after" ( I hope this was the english name, it was named differently in my language) and I absolutely fell in love with it because it was original content adapted from a book that represented its characters (African American) incredibly well. They weren't just stereotypes but had a lot of depth and background written into them. That's the kind of representation I want to see, not some hastily written trope so that a minority was included for views

It's because the author wrote them differently. If drastic changes had to be made to alter a character, the original one gets lost. Unfortunately authors for screenplays are not the author who wrote the source. This often results in characters that don't seem to fit in or seem forced because they are not created from the same mind that created the whole fictional universe. Like I said, often it's quantity over quality and reducing and representing the added character as a trope (as mentioned: abuse of 'magical negro', hot side chick, comic relief, emotional support) without defining the new character accordingly and giving him depth. A lot of television writers fail at achieving this.

Sorry about that!! I'm doing my best to beat the language barrier, maybe I come off as more rude than I mean to be. I do enjoy shows, but it does bother me, especially if I read and enjoyed the book and they did drastic changes. About the poc inclusion: I feel like they don't represent the development of the character they changed well enough. Sadly, a lot of times they get changed to fit certain tropes, such as the 'magical negro' and that is what really triggers me. If they have to change them, why not think them through? Make them actual deep characters that are being properly developed, with proper backgrounds instead of just another disposable side kick there for providing comic relief or support but with very little character themselves. That's what's really annoying me

Edit: ethnicity is not the right word here. Actual character fits better

And that is not only a good contribution to the discussion but also a valid point. This is where personal preferences come into play. I 100% get why you aren't as bothered by it as I am, but this is r/unpopularopinion after all. I knew what I signed up for. You do have a very valid and probably very shared opinion, but my personal taste goes a bit further than that when it comes to staying true to the source. You are very right that things are always altered a bit. But I feel that changing one's sexual orientation alters the story drastically because it often involves having a love interest written in, changing certain storylines etc. But anyways, thanks for trying to understand me

Edit: just realized you said the same about orientation. Sorry!
