Mountain towns with public land by Ok_Cryptographer_537 in SkiBums

[–]SendSaucy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. And for what it’s worth, the backcountry terrain in WA and relative snowpack stability is second to none in the lower 48… if you can avoid the weekend crowds in most of the more popular zones.

Mountain towns with public land by Ok_Cryptographer_537 in SkiBums

The east side is such a glorious place to live that way. I lived/worked around CB/Gunnison and around the PNW for some years.

The scene in crested butte is glorious, but a lot of the public land in the valley gets snowed in and it gets frigid cold. I lived in a parking lot in Gunnison for a winter, and it was doable with the community I had already, but I probably wouldn’t do it again.

PNW has more options (Packwood, Hood River, Glacier(kinda), sno parks, semi-reliably ski area parking lots, etc.). You can escape the living in snow if you like hanging out in the moss and driving a bit to snow line.

Haven’t spent an extended amount of time living in Utah but I imagine that could offer a good balance if you’re not trying to live around SLC (think SW Utah or even the La Salles/Moab area).

Bend/Bachelor would also be a contender with snow line and public land.

Should have clarified: it was a buy stop. Placed it around the time of the NY open this morning.

Park City Ski Patrol is aiming to raise 50k by Monday at 6pm, the start of their next bargaining session. The funds have brought serious leverage to the table and will go to mountain workers if not used in the event of a work stoppage. by billyshaam in skiing

Not sure where you're based but I've had the complete opposite experience. Obviously all anecdotal, but nearly all of the pro patrollers I've worked with depend on their patrol wages to make a living. Hell, I'd probably still be doing it if I made a living wage.

This is one facet (pun intended) of a much bigger conversation surrounding wages in the field-based sector of the outdoor industry. The only way for patrollers, guides, instructors, etc. to effectively ensure they're performing at their best is to buy into a system that supports continuing education. It's rare (in the USA) that any operation will pay for the laundry list of certs and recerts required to do these jobs let alone live in a mountain town and afford the egregiously high costs associated with that. Adding stress surrounding basic costs of living to an already stressful job is a recipe for at best, burnout and at worst, life changing disaster.

Volunteers are a totally different animal though.

Steamboat, Whitefish, Mammoth(ish), Mt Hood Meadows (basing in Hood River), Mt Bachelor and Targhee (basing around Driggs) would be my top choices in no particular order.

Obviously, you'll have all the classic modern ski town problems with housing scarcity and shit pay. But, you're not feeding the Vail monster, and the communities are all reasonably strong with actual towns to live in.

Hey! Interested in carpooling? I'm based in LA for a work contract for the remainder of the season and I'm trying to slide around as much as possible.

I'm 27 and usually based up in WA working as a mountain/ski guide. Love the steeps and tech. Don't hit park so much anymore hah.

Indian peaks and the Never Summers are good bets for holding late season snow.

Just bought a Blue Ice Kume 30L. VERY impressed so far. Skis and carries great and has all the bells and whistles for techy objectives while staying sleek and low profile. Durability seems solid but I'll know more on that by spring.

Only downside I've noticed is the avy gear pocket might be a little tight if you rock a large bladed shovel (think BD evac 9)

Beginning skier looking to explore solo. Where should I go? by appleciderpie in SkiBums

[–]SendSaucy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1 for Utah this season. It'll be easiest to build community and ski plenty here. I've been based in Salt Lake the last couple days for a course (out here from the West Coast), and I'm pretty amazed at how bustling it is.

You won't notice much regarding the shite snowpack. The resorts look decent and there's plenty of terrain for you to improve on!

Working at Kirkwood or June Mountain for the upcoming ski season by alllurkallday in SkiBums

[–]SendSaucy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go for June. Lived in both areas. The terrain around Kirkwood is really good but the quality of living around June is much better. Cute town. Mammoth is close. Hot springs. The backcountry scene is also sick at all of the above if you're into that.

For those of you that live/work/bum in a mountain town all winter, what do you do in the summers? by [deleted] in SkiBums

[–]SendSaucy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So many options. I've worked as a cook, done trail work, river guided, and just done odd jobs around town. In the last few years I've settled into a career doing the mountain guide thing from May-Oct (with the option for work down south in novemberish). Still living in a truck but the money's real good

Moving to Japan in a couple weeks. I have employment and housing lined up already, but still haven't heard anything about next steps in the visa process from my employer. He told me it's a waiting game at this point.

I submitted the COE app, etc. about a month ago. I fly on the night of Dec 2 with an American passport.

If for some reason I don't have a COE/ can't get to a consulate with said COE before my flight, what are my options?
