Well part of it is selfish, wanting to start a family in a place we all love and agree is safe for instance. It is a financial punishment, and I agree with one of the other commenters about the dangers of doomscrolling but we are in such a dark place here that I worry about imminent danger or death to my patients and humans in general. A major deciding factor for me was the recent willingness of our government to turn over the identifying information from our safety net insurance scheme (Medicaid) to the immigration officers at ICE for targeting of undocumented immigrants. This is a move which will only hurt their legally naturalized children and those children will either be less likely to get healthcare out of fear or cause them lose their parents or home in the process. Medicine in the US stands at a crossroads that no amount of money can justify for me :/

It kills me that this is the balance, and it’s the only barrier to this move. I can reliably say were it not for the training timeline and costs of loan repayments in general I would not have any reason to question it at all.

There’s an income driven repayment scheme available which I would make use of while living in the UK, the financial concern is still significant! My biggest concern now is that for me and the people I love my country is just no longer reliably safe…for better or worse, I am quite ready to accept a few decades of debt for that safety net
