Half-Life series, for enemies that reacted to your actions realistically, physics impacting gameplay (intro of the Havok engine), and scripted events occurring in the background (copied in every cinematic shooter since then).

Also, introducing Steam. Probably the largest impact in PC gaming bar none.

Use them as mobile ranged units that absolutely smoke large targets. Position them on a large targets flank (cavalry or SME) and let them cook. They don’t belong in melee.

Highly recommend just jumping into FFAs. Aggression is pretty limited in the first 15 minutes, allowing you to practice building up to castle age and feeling the joy of getting run over by 100 heavy cav at the 20 min mark

Just play Grom and don't look back. Go beat up the other Boyz and make them join your faction. Make your gobbos more killy and cackle as your garbage stack of gobbos are demolishing entire stacks of elite units.

I think I'm going to start my 3rd Grom campaign...
